trouble setting custom dns mx records so email works

  • Unknown's avatar

I currently have email through my web host, and since I mapped my domain from the web host to wordpress.com for our new site (following the wp instructions, I’ve also paid for the domain mapping). But I can’t figure out how the custom dns record should look. I’m a complete newbie (obviously) and I currently have it as:
    MX 10 ns1.fatcow.com
    MX 20 ns2.fatcow.com

which is really just a guess and is trying to copy the samples listed on the support docs. The problem is I’m just not sure if what I’m copying is the right process. It validated okay, but the email’s still not working. I’ve read through several forums on wp, but the support doc for creating custom dns records is not dumb enough for me, I’m afraid. Any advice is welcome, as our company’s email is currently non working and won’t be until I figure this out.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Your records seem to be set correctly, but the destinations may be incorrect.

Check with Fatcow one more time to make sure that you have the right records.

Thanks, Mr Happiness Engineer – I contacted my host again, and I did indeed have an error in the destination (mx.fatcow.com, not ns1 or ns2). I’ll wait until tomorrow to verify that the email’s actually working, but I appreciate your help. Thanks!!
