Trouble Starting Free Website
-
I tried to start a free website through WordPress earlier this week, but it was very confusing and all my typed in work kept disappearing before I could even finish. Plus, it seemed like I was being directed to create a blog and not a website. Can I delete everything, including my log in info and start again? The steps seem very confusing. It looked like I could customize to build a free website for my education book study group, but how do I get to make a lovely page with a main painting or a collection of three paintings in the center and a color background print behind that? How do I make pages with tabs?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That doesn’t usually happen unless one has a browser related issue or a connectivity issue.
In order to help you Staff need to know your specific computing environment details. Please work through what follows and report back.
1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view
3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

Plus, it seemed like I was being directed to create a blog and not a website.
A blog is a website.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

Note that every theme will have a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site page that you can consult. Here’s an example:

Can I delete everything, including my log in info and start again?
You cannot delete a username account https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/
If you delete the blog URL then you will not be able to register it again as no deleted blog URLs are recycled
https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/You can easily and quickly remove any content you added to the blog.

Do you want to design your blog/site as a website look, with tabs to different pages like in this example: https://wordpress.com/themes/misty-lake/
I do not know if your theme has this feature but if you go to appearance then customize and you will need to change your theme to static or static page, not post page, it will show or tell you if you have this feature. if you have it on post page everything you post they will go on the main page. Static is more of a website feel.
You can also try to go to pages, then add new, name your page and click publish. If you want to do a page as a drop down there is a feature on the side of your page in edit. it is best to create all pages first then choose later on which you prefer as drobdown. For example you create an about page, then you create a contact page and to have that as dropdown you can click on edit section of page right hand side parent – about. I cannot remember if can do this if site is not changed to static though but you can try it.
i hope this is what you wanted to do
