Trouble with blocks

  • Unknown's avatar

I just switched from Wix and am finding this super complicated. All I want is a page composed of a list of small images to the left with a few paragraphs of text to the right of each image. I understand how to add blocks one after the other in a column, but if I add two different image-with-text-beside-it blocks, changing the words and image in one simultaneously changes the other, and I don’t understand how to unsync them. I also can’t figure out if there’s a way to make a two column view conform to a regular grid, so the titles in each are lined up with one another rather than staggered. Is there a way to get more structure generally?

Hi there, that sounds like a bug unless the block you are using is a Reusable Block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/ that you have saved? If it is a Reusable Block, you should first Convert to Regular Blocks in the toolbar, which will make it a standalone block.

Regardless, I’ve flagged this thread for Staff attention to this issue.

Another option is to insert multiple instances of the columns block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/columns-block/

Post back here if you have other questions about this and if you need more help, please share a link to the site you need help with. Thanks.

Hi there! I’m not seeing any posts or pages that have two different image/text blocks to see the problem in action.

Also, you might want to try the Media + Text block if you want to have images with text next to them for your homepage. You might find that easier than setting an image and wrapping the text around it.

Let us know if you still have trouble and we’ll be happy to help. Please provide a link to the page you’re editing that’s showing the problem as well.

    Thanks!

Thanks so much! I was using reusable blocks, and I did click “Convert to Regular Blocks” on one but not the other, so that fixed the synching issue!

Do you have a solution for lining up two columns with each other? I’ve switched the page to a single column for now because I couldn’t keep them in order with two.

  • Hi there,

Can you provide a link to the post or page that is having the column aligning issue? We’d be happy to take a look and see if we can assist.

    Thanks!

Hello again, besides providing a link as staff-doublebassd requested, you said,

I was using reusable blocks, and I did click “Convert to Regular Blocks” on one but not the other

Any time you change the content of a Reusable block in one place, it will update all the other instances where that Reusable block has been used. Unless you’re using the exact same content in a block in multiple places, like a subscription or sign-up form, make sure you convert to regular blocks each time after inserting the Reusable block.

    Hope that helps clarify.

It seems like my column/grid issue is solved by making a different table/set of columns for each row, and then that aligns it like a grid.

    Thanks for the help!
