Trouble with Domain Mapping, Can I map to another blog?
-
Hello,
I started this blog first
http://poetryeastwest.wordpress.com/then I registered a domain name and mapped to it last night. Due to timezone difference, my friend in China tried to open it today but failed (he can’t open it):
http://poetryeastwest.com/Is it blocked in China? If blocked (for whatever reason), can I start another blog and map the domain name to a brand new blog? because I don’t want to waste this domain name. I would like to use this domain for a blog that can be viewed in China. Pls advise, I have been searching for hours to find a solution… I would appreciate your help very much.
frustrated,
Mindy at Poetryeastwest

I’m sorry I can’t help you but I have flagged this thread for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting for them to reply to you.

The China part I can’t help with – but it looks like your domain mapping is less than 72 hours old so your friend might have just ran into the changes not migrated to the far corner of the internet thing. It can take a while for changes to reach all corners of the internet.

It’s redirecting fine for me on this little island off the west coast of Canada. -

http://poetryeastwest.com/ appears to be working properly.
It can take domain changes up to 72 hours (though usually much less) to propagate to the various ISPs across the world. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often each ISP refreshes their DNS cache.

Thank you all for your feedback. I appreciate it
If 72 hours will solve the problem, that would be wonderful. Will test again around 72 hr time.
Thank you again!

It’s been 72 hours, still not resolved automatically. What shall I do ?
Can I open another blog and map the domain to a brand new blog like I mentioned in the the first post? Pleas let me know. Thank you very much.

As the above guys mentioned, your domain is redirecting well. I can also see http://poetryeastwest.wordpress.com/ is redirecting to http://poetryeastwest.com/
What you should do is to clear your browser’s caches to resolve it. You don’t need to do anything silly like creating another blog. -
If clearing your browser’s cache doesn’t take care of it, try clearing your local DNS cache: http://www.opendns.com/support/article/68

Thank you both very much. I can open the blog from USA, no problem. From USA or Europe, never a problem. But I created this blog for friends in China. They have problems opening it — today is 4th day, they can’t see much, only partial words, no pictures at all. — I sent the link to a few people who have never access this blog before, so there is no issue of browser’s caches. What’s the real solution then? Pls advise.
I was asking if I should create another blog and re-mapping because: friends in China said they couldn’t open my blog, so I registered a domain name hoping it would help resolve the problem. Now the domain mapping is successful but they can open it (very slow) without being bale to see a full blog, only part of it, no pictures shown.

China does block WordPress.com for censorship (or whatever their reason, that’s the only one that makes a bit of sense), but previously mapped domains made it through. I wouldn’t doubt that they’ve found a way around that. :(
As a workaround, you can try using a VPN or proxy to access the blog. The following links provide some options that you may be able to explore and/or use:

We have also heard that some users have had luck simply by using Opera Turbo:

thanks but that would be so inconvenient….
WordPress doesn’t have customer service phone number to call… after all these days nothing woks… so frustrated… If previous domain mapping made it through like you said, why can’t I re-map my domain to a brand new blog to give it a try then?
I just created a new blog: poetrychina.wordpress.com
Can I re-direct my domain to this new blog? But first of all, can wordpress allow me to cancel my other upgrading/mapping and allow me to re-map the domain to this new blog? Can someone let me know? would really appreciate it. Are you guys from wordpress? Can wordpress customer service give me an answer? (i wasted so many days…)Mindy

What I mean is that China is probably now blocking that method too. We have no control over how China chooses to block sites.
I can move the domain mapping to a different blog for you, but I can guarantee that won’t work in this case. If you’d like, I can also cancel and refund it.

Google along the lines of “The Great Firewall of China” and you should get a pile of info about others with your problem – I am not staff – but I have seen several people struggle with China and access – and it also seemed at times that regular WordPress.COM sites got through and there also seemed to be differences based on where people were logged in at.
There were I think recent rumors of a coup of some sort in China and that provoked a massive crackdown on the internet by the Govt. in China don’t know if your friends access problem is related.

I’ve learned that other people are successful in getting around if they use English only, using Chinese language too much from overseas like me gets blocked– it’s a guess, the censorship targets on the Chinese language more. Maybe the whole wordpress is blocked, maybe Not. It’s worth to try one more time and I appreciate your help. I have re-directed the domain to this new blog: poetrychina.wordpress.com
Would you help me re-map? I will ask friends in China to test it — to see if they can open it and see words and pictures. Thanks a lot. – Mindy -

wow, that’s quick.
I will let you know the result, sending the link to China now… thanks! -
