Trouble with excerpts/more tag in Origin theme

    Hi there,

Thanks very much in advance for anyone who can give me some useful advice here. I am trying to post to my new blog, which uses the Origin theme.

I wrote my article, and put in a more tag after the 2nd paragraph to split it. However, when I look at the homepage, all that displays is an excerpt shorter than I wanted, and the only link is the title of the post, so it isn’t immediately clear there’s more to read.

I’ve been reading up as much as I can, and I now realise that the Origin theme is set to automatically make all posts Excerpts on the home page. I however would much rather use the more tag, make an excerpt of my own length, include a picture and have a read more link at the bottom.

Does the more tag option just not work with Origin? Is there a way to stop it being automatically set to Excerpt? Or could I work around it by somehow getting a read more link show up from the custom excerpt box? Will I just have to choose another a theme if this is how I want stuff to display?

As I say, any help at all greatly appreciated!

The more tag works on themes that normally display full posts on the main posts page, not on themes that display excerpts.
Auto excerpts are the first 55 words of the post, with all HTML stripped out (so no line or paragraph breaks, no links, no images, etc). You can replace them with custom excerpts, by entering content into the Excerpt module of the post editor (including code for images), but it’s not worth doing this for each and every post: if you want to control how much of your post shows on your main page, you simply need a different theme.

Thanks very much. So there is no way to get Origin off making all posts Excerpts? If so that’s annoying, I spent ages picking the theme I like. Also, it’s hard to see where in the theme information when you’re choosing it tells you if it does this Excerpt thing.

Could anyone recommend a theme that is as similar visually as possible but where I wouldn’t have this issue? Thanks very much

    You’re welcome.
    a) No, you can’t change the way the theme works. Most themes are either full posts or excerpts. Very few themes allow you to select the one or the other.
    b) It’s not included in the theme info at all. But it’s fairly obvious when you see the demo. And you need to try a theme well before deciding it’s the right one for you.
    c) To find a theme you like, you need to browse the Theme Showcase site and check the demos:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/
I could recommend themes if you asked about a specific unusual feature. I can’t recommend anything based on just “similar visually”. I don’t know which features are or aren’t significant to you, and anyway the most prominent feature on Origin is precisely the excerpts (the fact that the main page displays all the posts in a shortened, uniform way). Other than that, Origin is an ordinary content/sidebar white theme.
Besides, you seem to be forgetting that you have the Custom Design upgrade: any theme that works the way you want can be changed to look the way you like.
