Trouble with theme CSS
-
I recently changed my theme for the first time in a really long time, to “Flower Power”. The width of the columns aren’t working for my page, so I purchased the CSS upgrade and can’t figure out how to use it.
I tried all of the obvious options, even tried copying the theme style sheet and working with just that data, but all it did was make the red image at the top disappear and threw off everything even more.
I’d love some help —- thanks in advance! :)

We can’t help without a link to the blog, starting with http.
There are virtually no volunteers who know CSS well enough to help out in the forums, and there’s no staff support for it, so if you do not know CSS fluently, it’s not advised that you purchase the upgrade. You may wish to get your money back by contacting staff.
There are several suggested resources in the CSS forum at the very top, and a look through those is always a good place to start, if you want to keep going.

Here is a link to a good CSS tutorial http://www.w3schools.com/Css/default.asp
Also this is a very good post to read before you start:
If you have the CSS upgrade – http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/ -
I’m sorry but the CSS upgrade is only recommended to bloggers with CSS editing experience. There is no Staff support for learning CSS and as Staff do not do the editing for you. There are only two remaining wordpress.com users who provide minimal assistance with CSS editing. Neither one appears to be logged in at present. You will have to wait patiently until one of them logs in and finds this thread.

mrsmdm2008,
Modifying your existing theme will required some work because to widen both columns there are other elements that will need to be tweaked as well… Images will need to be modified as well so that they fit the new width. For all the work that is involved, you’d be better off changing themes to one that fits your needs better.
And because of the amount of work that seems to be involved, I can’t do it right now. If you’re willing to wait, I will see what can be done in the course of the week, and will update this thread.
BTW, CSS is not hard to learn, if you know HTML, then you’re half way there. Like the404 once said:
There is no trick. But doing CSS requires an understanding of the markup (xhtml). There is no way round that. The CSS applies styles to stuff. To what stuff depends on the markup. So number one read the source (View Source). Get used to it. Feel comfortable with it. Two. Understand what the heck selectors actually are. Different cats of selectors behave in different ways. SO: this is counter intuitive. To understand the CSS do not start in CSS. Start in the xhtml. Then see how they relate. Its all there. :)
There are gazillions of CSS tutorials on line. -
Thanks, devblog — very helpful!
I may just change my theme again. Maybe I can study up on my CSS and try again when I have a better grasp on it. :)

mrsmdm2008,
First, I’m not one of the two bloggers TimeThief keeps referring to, but will try to help. Second, devblog is right CSS not hard to learn, if you know html. There are tons of books, blogs, sites, etc. I’d start with w3schools.com, for a primer, but keep in mind that most of the tutorials teach you how CSS *should* work, not how it works in any particular browser. Really, CSS is a snap to learn, it’s the darn browser specific gotchas that take up most of the time.Final BIG free tip: you will get somewhere a lot faster with a good CSS analysis tool. In IE, Microsoft provides the IE developer toolbar, and in Firefox, Firebug is extremely useful. These tools let you look at the html and css in concert, and you can very quickly hone in on what to fix if something is going “kerblooey” ( a highly technical term!) with your design.
Hope that helps. Good luck

The Andreas09 template may suit your needs. It is a three column full sized template. I’m running it right now with very modest tweaks to the CSS.
