Trouble with www domain forwarding

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve successfully made my domain (domain.com) forward to my wordpress blog through godaddy/google apps. I use domain masking and it seems to work great. I’d like to do the same with my http://www.domain.com but I can’t get it to work.

I noticed however that a www cname record is present under the Total DNS tab, that points to ghs.google.com. Does it have something to do with this? How can I make my http://www.domain.com address forward to my blog?

If possible I don’t want to use the wordpress domain upgrade at this time. I only want domain forwarding.

    Thank you for your help!

Have you contacted Staff and resolved this issue? http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

I’ve contacted the WordPress staff yesterday and will post their recommendations here once I get their answer. I’m waiting for a reply from the Google Apps support forum as well…

Ok I just received an answer from the support team:

    I’m afraid that won’t work.

You can forward (or map) any subdomain except WWW to your WordPress.com blog using a CNAME record.
Othewise, you’ll have to use the DNS to map your domain to your blog.

You can still use Google Apps Mail with your domain if it’s mapped to your blog:

I guess my only option is to buy the domain mapping upgrade.

Wait, I found a solution! Here are the exact steps to do if you have registered your domain through Google Apps, and want to forward your http://www.domain.com or domain.com to your blog :

    1) Log in my Domain Manager (Google Apps -> Domain Settings -> Domain names -> Advanced DNS Settings -> Sign in to DNS console)
    2) Click on my domain name
    3) Under Total DNS Control, delete the CNAME that has www as host
    4) Update your A(Host) entries to correspond to the following:
    Host: @ Points to: 64.202.189.170
    Host: www Points to: 64.202.189.170
    5) Close the Total DNS Control
    6) Click on Forward -> Forward Domain
    7) Enter your non-google site URL, and enable “Forward with Masking” (that’s up to you, if you want your domain name to stay in the address bar instead of your website url) and fill the blank fields (Title, Description, Keywords)
    8) Click on OK
    9) Click on Forward -> Forward subdomain -> Add subdomain
    10) Enter www in the “add domain field”
    11) Enter my website URL in the “Forward this subdomain to” field
    12) Click OK
    13) Log back in Google Apps -> Service Settings -> Sites -> Web address mapping, and delete the “www” reference.

You may have to wait up to 48 hours for the changes to take effect.

That was it. This has worked for my http://www.dudokdewit.net domain, I hope it’ll work for other people too!

I’m trying to set this up and will have to wait the 48 hours to see if it works for me…

    Thanks for the tip!
