Trusting regular commenters

  • Unknown's avatar

    Not infrequently I will have to approve a comment from someone who has been commenting sometimes daily for the past several years. Is there any way to prevent comments from a certain individual to NOT go to the pending queue?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    @TT –

    prevent comments from a certain individual to NOT go to the pending queue?

    The OP seems to want to White list a single commentator – the link you give is to allow everyone that has had an approved a comment to skip the moderation que – I don’t think a single commentator can be white listed

    Actually, I do want to whitelist anyone who has been approved for comments in the past. I have had this setting checked:
    “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”
    for years now, but it doesn’t seem to help. There are maybe 5 commenters who frequently end up in the pending queue, and they have posted more than a couple of hundred comments each. (FYI and FWIW, my blog has had ~16,000 comments since I started it February 2010.)

    Can someone tell me how to contact Support directly with this problem? Many thanks.

    Help! Akismet is catching a regular comment as spam!

    Note I tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. You will have to provide them the usernames and/or email addresses of these commenters whose comments are being sent into the spam queue.

    @auxclass

    I don’t think a single commentator can be white listed

    In essence, that’s correct but Akismet is a learning engine and it takes marking many false positive comments as not-spam for it to be convinced.

    Hi there,

    If I understand correctly, some of your previously approved commenters are ending up in the pending queue (but not the spam queue) instead of having their comments automatically approved and published. Is that right?

    In that case, can you send me a link to some of the comments where this happened on your blog? I’d be happy to investigate this for you.

    Hi Rachel, yes, you understand correctly. Unfortunately I don’t have a list of comments that ended up in the pending queue because I approved them all and don’t remember. However, the commenter “donnabeaglemama” frequently ends up in the queue (including, I believe, sometime last week). Is there an email I could use to send you the info next time it happens? Thanks, Laurie.

    Hi Laurie, thanks for confirming what happened. You can reply to this forum thread to let me know if this happens again, and then I can investigate the issue further. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Rachel,

    There is currently a comment in the pending queue from someone (“Sue -Jodi, Barney and Huggy’s Mom “) who has posted nearly every day for years. Thanks! Laurie

    Hi Laurie, thanks for pointing out this example! It looks like Sue changed the way she wrote her name when she left her comment this time. Even though you know it’s the same person, it’s a different name from the one you approved on her previous comments. Let me know if you have any questions about that!

    Hi Rachel,

    So it doesn’t matter if she uses the same email address? I would think that would be more definitive than how she writes her name.

    Hi Laurie,

    When someone leaves a comment using their name and email address (rather than leaving a comment while logged in to a WordPress.com account), any change to either their name or email address will mean that you have to approve their comment again.
