"Try & Customize" won't show my portfolio pages

  • Unknown's avatar

As I look at alternative themes for my website, choosing “Try & Customize” shows me the look of my home page and of my blog, but the links to the important pages visually—the book covers and the photos—don’t work. Is there some way I can call up these pages in alternate designs for previewing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

On a test site I was unable to replicate the issue you describe. I tried the “Try & Customize” option on several different themes, free and premium, and found that all of my menu links worked as normal. There was no page or post on the site that I was unable to preview. So I suspect that the results you’ve obtain might indicate a browser issue. Have you tried, as a test, using an alternate browser or a different device?

I should have said, “and I found in each case that all of my menu links worked as normal.”

    Hello @robhele
I’m going to add the modlook tag to your thread so the staff can have a closer look at your issue and help you solve it.

  • Hi airalis93 –

I’m following up on that Modlook tag. We aren’t really needed at this time. Once we hear back regarding this question we will have more information to move forward on.

So I suspect that the results you’ve obtain might indicate a browser issue. Have you tried, as a test, using an alternate browser or a different device?

Please note, that musicdoc1 is a very experienced forum volunteer and will ask for staff help when it is indicated.

I’m using a late model Macbook Pro and have tried both Chrome and Safari. I can’t imagine it’s a problem with either my machine or my browser. Could it have anything to do with my having a static home page? Or some other very obvious thing I’m doing wrong (which is usually the case)?

It’s an extremely basic static page with links to the blog page, the cover design portfolio page, and the photo portfolio page.

Each image on the cover design page links to a single page with the uncropped cover design with a credit. The photo page is simpler: clicking any photo opens to a carousel gallery.

Not one of the themes allows me to see the portfolio pages formatted in the theme.

Have just found that I also can’t see the two portfolio pages when I’m choosing “customize” from under the Design heading in the left column. In other words, if I merely want to see what a different color background would look like, I can see this only on my static home page or on my blogs page. Not on either of the two portfolio pages.

Just in case I’m misinterpreting your setup, can you confirm for me that your “Book Covers” (aka “Covers”) and “Photography” pages each have the portfolio page template assigned? Presuming that you have the portfolio page template assigned on those pages, I see what you mean now. In my previous tests I hadn’t scrolled down to look for the projects on a page with the portfolio page template assigned.

My tests today produced the same results that you’ve described, when I try to preview a page at Customize with the portfolio page template assigned on a random theme. However, these are the expected results, because most themes don’t have the option of a portfolio page template, including the ones I tested. The reason that the projects aren’t displayed in my case is that none of the themes I activated for the test (Calm Business, Friendly Business, Modern Business) has an optional portfolio page template. In fact none of those I tested has optional page templates at all.

Again presuming that you have the portfolio page template assigned on the Book Covers and Photography pages, the above reason would explain your results at Design > Themes. If a theme that you test at Design > Themes does not have an optional portfolio page template, then any page with that template assigned will display the default page template if there are no optional templates, and will likely display the default page template if there are options that don’t include the portfolio page template.

Have just found that I also can’t see the two portfolio pages when I’m choosing “customize” from under the Design heading in the left column.

The results at Design > Customize are less easy to explain. Your site has the Sketch theme activated, and Sketch has the portfolio page template option. So you should see the projects displayed on any page with that template assigned at Design > Customize. Might you have switched the theme activated temporarily before going to Design > Customize?

  • Hi there,

I took a look in your site’s Customizer, and I can see what you’re speaking of.

The problem is with your menu. I see you have both the Covers and Photography items added to the menu as custom links. However, the Custom Links option in the menu is intended for outgoing links, so custom links in a menu will never work in the Customizer – clicking them takes you away from a site, and the software assumes you don’t want to be taken out of the Customizer in that way, so any and all outgoing links are always disabled in the Customizer.

Edit your menu, remove the Covers and Photography items from the menu completely, then add them back from the Pages section in the menu editor, and you’ll be able to visit them in the Customizer.

    @musicdoc1
, /covers and /photography are still pages on the site, so even on a theme without the portfolio page template, one should still be able to visit the actual pages in the Customizer preview. They just won’t show any projects in that case.

I know that, and my responses indicate that I know that. However, the second time I came back I somehow misinterpreted the OP, and thought he was saying that the projects weren’t being displayed. Sorry about that. Thanks for the help! : -)

I understood his meaning the first time I responded, not the second.

I have to say, for all the frustration this platform gives me, the community support is pretty amazing. I never get this kind of response at either the Apple or Adobe forums. Thanks very much to both of you, doc and kokkieh.

I’m getting there now. Have removed and re-added the two portfolio pages. Can now see the Photo gallery in other themes. I can go to the Covers gallery now, too, but I can’t see the book covers. This is because I’ve somehow done something with shortcode on that page that I don’t know how to undo. (And I’m really hoping that undoing it won’t involve adding each cover back in individually, because if it does, I’m just leaving it as is.)

  • Howdy –

When I go to Covers from the site menu I can see this page load with the book covers. Do you still need help with this? It looks like you have it sorted now.

The Covers portfolio page loads fine. But when I use “Try & Customize” with any of the other themes, none of the covers show, and I think this is because of some short code in the Covers page. But I’m not sure what to do about it.

  • The page is specifically using the theme’s built-in Portfolio Page Template, which is automatically bringing in all of your portfolio items.

Not all themes have this template, which is why the page content basically disappears if you check in any other theme.

If you’re looking for new themes to try, most of these will have a built-in portfolio display somewhat like yours: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/feature:portfolio
