  I wanted to try wordpress so I have started the trial but it won’t let me proceed to the build stage until I buy or connect a domain. Given I am not sure whether I want to use wordpress or not, I do not want to do either of these things at this stage. Can I try the builder without this step?

  Trial? Are you looking at WordPress.com or somewhere else? Here you can create a free site with an address ending in .wordpress.com or .home.blog or similar.
