trying desperately to install WP-SNAP…
-
Hi
I’m new here and probably have yet to learn many stuff that seems basic to you. But meanwhile I really need help. Here’s my trouble: I’m totally lost trying to install this widget:
http://www.nateomedia.com/wares/downloads/wordpress/wp-snapAnd since I’m no good at web programming got hopelessly stuck on this very first instruction: “extract it and upload it to your WordPress Plugins folder on your site.”
“Note: For the Plugin to work, you must have access to edit your WordPress Theme files. You must also have a category.php template file in your WordPress Theme. If you do not, you can create one following the instructions on the WordPress Codex for creating a category template file”. (which is here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates and here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Stepping_Into_Templates)
Now, what does he mean by “having acces to edit my WP Theme files”? is it not a free service?
also, I didn’t find the instructions to create a template file in those links i provided. Is it that I didn’t search well?
Your help would be appreciated to give me some.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Plugins are designed for self-hosted wordpress blogs. Here at the wordpress.COM free hosting service, we cannot use plugins, and we have no access to the underlying wordpress or theme files. This is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying file so any change made by one person would change it for everyone using that particular theme.
Check the sticky post (yellow section) at the top of the main forum page for the differences between wordpress.ORG and wordpress.COM.

ooook… thanks a lot, Richard!
Those instructions never mentioned you need to be registered at .ORG to get the plugins work, so I got confused. Anyways, thanks again…
Otherwise, does anyone have an idea, can I hope for a glossary here at .COM?

You’re welcome.
Few plugin pages or theme sites mention the fact that their stuff will not work at wordpress.COM, and truth be told, many of them may not even know that .COM exists, or if they do, that there are differences. It would certainly lessen confusion if they would tell people that their wares will not work here.
Most of the stuff about plugins and themes and what can and cannot be done here are in the FAQ’s and in the new support pages, but it is scattered around all over the place. It would be nice if there was one place where it was all put together.
