Trying out Templates Without Mapping Domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to set up a new website, but can’t get past the page that demands I map my domain. But I’m not ready to do that yet, because my domain is currently pointed elsewhere, and I first need to see if the WordPress templates work for my purpose. How do I get past that page to start designing my website, and then later map it?

    Hi there!

You can choose a free .wordpress.com address in order to get started with a free WordPress.com site. You can go to https://wordpress.com/pricing → start with the Free plan. When it asks for the address, type something like yoursitename.wordpress.com replacing yoursitename with a desired name of your choice.

Once you choose the free plan and a free .wordpress.com address, you won’t be asked to map your domain or purchase a paid plan during the site creation process. You can upgrade at a later time by going to https://wordpress.com/plans when you’re ready.

Feel free to let us know if there’s anything else you need and we’ll be happy to help.

Thanks so much for your help. I still get stuck on that page though. It doesn’t say so anywhere on the page, but it appears that someone else is using my domain name as a WordPress site already, because I’m being offered alternatives.

I know other WordPress users who have both the WordPress subdomain and their domain associated, where typing in the WordPress URL defaults to their primary domain. I don’t really want to associate a completely different WordPress domain with the domain name I actually own, or get the other person’s site confused with mine, when I map my site to my domain. Is the domain name I choose to get started a name I will be locked into, or can I change that later, before I publish?

  • Hello there,

I think there may be some confusion happening here.

Just to check, are you trying to use a domain you already own with multiple sites? If yes, that wouldn’t be possible.

It may be possible via a sub-domain, but not as the main domain.

Also, can you confirm the domain you need help with please?

    Many thanks,

Sorry, I might have gotten a bit convoluted there.

I have a site with Google that I had to convert to their new system, and now the site looks nothing like it did before. So I want to try out some of the WordPress templates to see if I can recreate the site here.

I’m not ready to commit to rebuilding the site here until I’ve played around with the templates. But even just to get to the templates, I seem to have to commit to a domain name.

My domain is currently online elsewhere, and the WordPress subdomain of the same name is already used by someone else.

It’s not clear to me if I can just make up a temporary name, that I can then change later, or if whatever work I do with the templates is locked into that domain name.

I really just want to try out the templates, and if I’m happy with the design I come up with, then start the process of pointing my domain to the pages I made.

You can create a free site here with any random subdomain name under the sun (as long as it ends in .wordpress.com). If later you wish to point your domain to that site by purchasing a plan then the domain you already own would become the primary domain and that is the address visitors would see in their browser address bar.

Yes, as @themagicrobot said, you can get your site set up here before switching your domain over.

When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.

Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:

Note that you will need a paid plan at the time you want to map your domain to the site. You can compare the different plan levels here:

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any questions.
