Trying out wordpress
-
Hello. I’m currently with WIX but am thinking of switching to wordpress to intergrate my shopify online store and I just love the wordpress layouts. I’m trying to have a go at creating a free template, to see how I get on but before I even start wordpress is trying to bill me for upgrading (I haven’t even had a look at site templates or anything!). Would you please help me work out how I can try trialing wordpress before deciding whether I wish to go with it? thank you :)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no secure payments system here at wordpress.COM and you cannot add a shopping cart to sites hosted by wordpress.COM.
E-commerce options have been removed here at WordPress.COM. Secure payment systems are not available here at wordpress.COM. You need a wordpress.ORG install. Please read this https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/e-commerce-22?replies=17#post-2575955
Provided you are selling only what you yourself make or a service that you personally provide on a wordpress.COM site you have two options.
(1) PayPal – Know that the only instructions that will work for posting a PayPal donation button on a WordPress.com blog are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
Note that the PayPal email link is not supported and PayPal customization options are not supported either https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/paypal-button-41?replies=12#post-2517229 This is not likely to be changed any time soon, if at all.(2) If you set up an eCommerce site somewhere else online you can create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and include a custom link to that site in it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links
Some bloggers create a contact form https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ on a page and after the people have made a PayPal donation they provide the link to a private page for downloading files. Maybe that will work for you.

Thanks timethief – I’ve now managed to get in and trying to upload a custom theme I downloaded but there isn’t an option! Apparantly it should be on the “appearance” section and themes, there should be an option to choose file but nope nothing… It took a lot to even find the dashboard! I ended up having to type a further address after my site address to access it – no button I could find,

trying to upload a custom theme
That is not possible.
If you are reading anything that makes you think that bloggers can install any third party or custom themes on sites hosted by wordpress.COM, then you are mistaken/misinformed. You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted blogs and wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.
This is the wordpress.COM support forum. There is no FTP access https://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/ to sites hosted here and you cannot upload any custom themes or third party themes, or create your own theme here at wordpress.COM, or use stylesheets from another theme. You can do those only on wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
Read: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
There is no upgrade you can buy here that changes that.If your site remains hosted here at wordpress.COM and you purchased a third-party theme, then you will have to get a refund.
Alternatively, this guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform:
Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
For a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Hi @lspactions,
You can upload custom themes and plugins to your own WordPress.org installation at another host.
Or you could use one of our built-in themes and our features to create a site here. You don’t need to make a paid site to do that, either. If you choose a paid plan you do get one-on-one support.
At this time the only e-commerce we have here is paypal buttons:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal-transaction-id/We are working on more options, though.
And these are the themes you can choose from:
https://wordpress.com/themesHow else can we help for now?
