Trying out WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m currently using Squarespace to exhibit my portfolio. It is an extremely limiting web development tool and I have seen how beautiful websites can look using the WordPress platform. I was hoping to set up an account and create a website with WordPress just to see if it would be a better tool for me. I have already downloaded a theme I wanted to use and paid $51 for it, but I have run into the following problem:

I can’t upload and use the theme: there is no Add Theme button for me.

Is there no way I can setup my theme layout before choosing to switch to WordPress without paying anything? All I’m trying to do is decide which host is better and it seems like every time I discover new things in WordPress, I’m forced to upgrade my account without even creating a site.
If I can make a better looking website in WordPress I will switch hosts, but there is no way for me to tell until I can actually make a site.

    Hi,

Regardless of whether you have a free WordPress.com account or a paid account, a custom theme can not be uploaded to a site. See the Uploading Custom Themes section of the Themes support page or the Uploading Custom Themes support page.

Custom themes may be added to WordPress.org sites. See the WordPress.org and WordPress.com support page for a brief comparative overview of these two “flavors” of WordPress.

  • There are two types of WordPress sites – ones hosted here on WordPress.com, where you can choose from our curated selection of themes, and ones where you run the software on your own hosting, and can upload any theme or plugin.

It sounds like you purchased a theme for a self-hosted WordPress site, so you won’t be able to upload it here.

As musicdoc1 pointed out earlier, you have two main options:

    1. You could ask for a refund from the theme shop and then choose a free or premium theme here on WordPress.com. You can see the selection here: https://wordpress.com/themes/
    2. Set up a self-hosted WordPress install and upload your already purchased theme there.

If you’re not sure which route to take, you can read the comparison post that musicdoc1 posted earlier, and there’s some additional information here:
