Trying to access data
-
I decided to keep my blog at wordpress.com since I had too many other problems trying to move it to a wordpress.org host. I do believe the benefits outweighed the problems I experienced. I just decided to redirect my domain name (www.the6thfloor.com) to my hosted wordpress.com blog (the6thfloor.wordpress.com).
Now one of the drawbacks is not having the ability to use Javascript on a wordpress.com site. I am attempting to access my logbook (for amateur radio), which is stored online (hrdlog.net), but their script won’t run on wordpress.com. Is there another way I could still access my online database using wordpress.com. Maybe a widget or some other way to access the data that I have saved online or on my ftp I use?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not that I know of. With flash, there is the gigya shortcode that will let you use flash, but I know of no way to make javascript work here. It is a security issue.
About all I can suggest would be to link to the logbook from your blog. Don’t know if that will work for you or not.

Yeah I understand the vulnerability issues with Java, I currently have it linked to the site where my records are stored, but it’s not really the best way to do it. Was just looking for other alternatives. Thanks for the input.

@stoumi
The best alternative may be to hire a web host and get a free software install from wordpress.ORG if the limitations found in this post are a deal breaker for you. See here > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ At the least becoming familiar with the differences between free hosted wordpress.COM blogs and wordpress.ORG installs for self hosting as it will save you a lot of time that can be wasted by “tilting at windmills”. :) -
timethief, thank you much for the comment. I have attempted numerous times to install on my current host (IPOWER). Unfortunately (and maybe I haven’t spent enough time reading) the TwentyTen theme I currently use does not have all the functionality when installed as a wordpress.org site. If I knew I could set up my current site in my host as I have it set up now, I would make the move and you’re right, my issue would resolve itself. I have not checked if there are plugins in that would provide me the functionality I was looking for (for example the image in the right sidebar).

WordPress.COM has a lot of features that are not in the self-hosted version partly because we cannot install plugins and such here. On self-hosted blogs, you have to add that missing functionality yourself through the use of plugins.
-
Good news / Bad news about a WordPress.COM site is that many functions of Plug-in’s are built into the Themes in the form of extra Widgets so when you move off WordPress.COM you usually need to find some Plug-in’s to replace the functions one gets use to here.
-
Okay, so I guess I answered my own question then. I need to spend a bit more time reading up on what plugins I need in order to bring that missing functionality to my self hosted wordpress.org site.
-
You can search the plugins over at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ . There are literally thousands over there, and in many cases multiple versions of each type with different capabilities and features.

…back to the frustration and initial configuration at my host. We’ll give it another shot to see how it goes. Thanks again, consider this closed.
