I am trying to start a blog from the MLB website. everything works fine but the domain. It keeps telling only can use letter number or hyphens. That is all I am using

I did that myself, cause I thought that is what i needed. I try just jumbles of letters and it still doesnt work

Are you trying to buy a custom domain name like “cubsfaniniowa” so that you can domain map it to a blog here?
If so you need to add something like .com to the end of the domain name when you register it – like “cubsfaniniowa.com” and that will cost you $ 18.– per year for domain name registration and domain mapping
