Trying to add a free version domain name to my account

    Hi,
I am trying to add a free version domain name to my account, but when I type in the domain name I want there is no option for the free version. Everything is $22 or something. All I want is the free version (www.domainname.blog.wordpress.com). I don’t need a custom domain name. I just want the free version for now. I created a new domain the ‘getting started’ way, which was wrong and had an engineer transfer it to my account, but I don’t want to use that one right now. I want to just hold it. I have a third I want to create and use now.

The instructions say how to do it and mentions something about the free version being highlighted in green, but it doesn’t come up with that option on my screen. Everything has a price attached. I see nothing in green for the free version as the instructions claim.

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No response at all? Why do I get the feeling that WordPress no longer wants to host my site(s)?
Is it because I want to stick with the free plan instead of spending a bunch of money on a site that might get 1 visitor a week if the weather is right and the planets line up or something?

I’m not asking for a paid plan for free. I am just trying to add a domain name to my account under the “free plan” and the instructions and what I see are not matching.

    Thank you

Ok, I give up. I will just no longer have a site I guess and find something else. It is not easy giving up a passion and something you have spent 3 years plus doing, but with net neutrality gone come June and what seems a mass exit by engineers at WordPress (there may be some correlation to net neutrality issues there, don’t know), it may be all one can do. Can’t fight city hall.

All I wanted to do was add a domain name to my existing account, which according to the rules, I can do so without purchasing a plan at all and it would just be on the “Free plan”, which is fine for me. Apparently, it is no longer allowed. I do wish you would update the information to reflect that so that others don’t have to go through what I went through.

    Thank you

Sorry you didn’t get an answer before! Staff is out on training, and this may have been missed by volunteers because you replied to it.

I think you may be on the wrong page for what you want to do, and that’s why you’re seeing purchase options. You seem to be on the page to add a domain name to your existing blog.

Do you want to a) change the current site address of your blog to a new one, or b) start a new blog under the same account with a different domain address?

    Hi anonsmithe,

I am trying to add a free version domain name to my account, but when I type in the domain name I want there is no option for the free version. Everything is $22 or something.

We provide the option to register a free address ending in .wordpress.com (example.wordpress.com) but custom domains (example.com) are a feature of paid plans. Which address are you being prompted to pay $22 for?

Just let me know and we can go from there.

    Hi Gemmacevans,

I want to start a new blog under the same account with a different domain address. I do not want a custom domain at this point. I just want a free address for now. Perhaps later, I may get a plan, but right now it was be throwing away hard earned money on nothing.

I was just told to use the “start a new blog” thing, but the last time I did that, it was a train wreck. I had to have engineers move it to my existing account and it took weeks! (That’s how musicmajick was born and I do not want to use that address now. I am not going through that again! I am absolutely paranoid about it.

I just want to add a free domain name/address to my account so I can use it for my new blog/site.
When I go to add a domain name in my account, the address I want is available, but all the variations, including the main one want $22+. There is no “Free address” option in green like the instructions say.

I should have been working on my new site/blog a month ago, but have had nothing but trouble with this. I’m at the point now that I can say even just one more week delay and I am giving up on all of it.

Can you help me do this please?

    Thank you

    Hi anonsmithe,

Can you confirm which domain you are entering and want to use? Just let me know and I can look into what is happening.

I know that @gemmacevans is helping you here, but my understanding is that you are adding that as a domain to your existing site. You would do this my going to My site, then to Domains. This would be to add to the site you already have within your account.

You are actually intending to add a new site under the same account. Despite the fiasco last time and feeling this is not what you want to do, the way to create a separate site under your account would be to use https://wordpress.com/start/free/.

Does that seem like an explanation for what you are experiencing?

    Hi Darciemg,

Yes, I am trying to add a domain to my account the way you describe through the dashboard and I do want it for a separate site, because of the direction of the content, which won’t be drastically different save a few additions and subtractions giving a new feel and I can not wallup my readers with a sudden shut down and “under construction” notice while I spend a lengthy time making changes. (My current site is somewhat basic but semi-pro in feel and structure, – I have industry folks looking at it these days, my new site will be more casual).

So yes, I am intending to add a new site under my current account. Are you sure going to the https://wordpress.com/start/free will put it in my account and I will be able to log into my dashboard as usual with the same log in? I ask because this is not what happened when I did it before. It created a whole new account.
Hmm, I’m thinking one thing I did that might have made a wrong turn was when it asked for an email. I used a a new one and that might have made it create a different account. I also then could not get it to verify.

So should I “try again” and use the same email that is on my current account and then that will make and keep everything straight? Oh wait, I’m not even sure it will let me do that, it will probably tell me that there is already an account for that email and kick me out.

Please advise so I do this correctly and the result is correct.

    Thank you

I’ve just clicked on https://wordpress.com/start/free whilst logged in to WordPress.com and created another free site in about 30 seconds. I didn’t accept the default free offering with 8 numbers and used a similar address to my existing one but with a single number. There was no mention of email addresses because the new free site was just added to my account and I can now access it via “My Sites” “switch site”.

Hmm, this makes me think perhaps I was not logged in when I did it last time, but I could swear I was, I’m not sure now.

Yes, if you needed to enter an email before and you ended up creating that site in a different account, you were not signed in as this one when you created it. However, using the link I gave and themagicrobot tested would be the way to add a new site under this account. Just don’t logout first! You want to be signed in as this account to create a new site under this account. You’re creating a new site only.

Give that a try? I see your domain of choice has not been created yet.

    Hi Darcie,

Ok, with that vote of the possibility of my mistake previously, I will give that a try.

Yes, I have not created the domain yet because I was not getting the free plan option.

I will let you know how it goes.

Ok, it looks like that part worked, but now I have no access to my dashboard for the new site!

I can only use the dashboard for my current site. When I switch to the new one it goes to that weird and completely unusable version of Dashboard with the blue color. I can’t write or do much else in that version. I prefer the “old” version I use for my current site.

How do I get that for both my current and new site?

Great! It sounds like you want the old dashboard. Adding /wp-admin like https://musicandmindfulness.wordpress.com/wp-admin will get you to that design.

    Hi Darciemg,

Yes, great! I did that first and saw info from my current site and got confused thinking it did not work. I just dud it again via your link provided and then clicked on “posts” and all was right with the world.

Now I need to copy and past some of the articles from my current site to the new one (once I pick a theme). I am guessing that just having both dashboards open in different tabs in my browser will apply to that job. (I’m assuming pics and videos will copy over as well).

If all that is correct, it means I can finally get to work building the new site/blog!

Yes, the old dashboard is far easier to work with. I write and administer on a desktop PC. The new dashboard is more limited in functions and sections like “writing” are designed for smart phones or something, (I don’t even own one of those and never will).
There are some things I end up using in the new dashboard, like menu creation, it is easier there, but main functions and writing are easier in the old dashboard.
If they ever take the old dashboard away, I’m finished!

    Thank you
