Trying to build a new website
-
Hi all, Back in 2014 I have started building a website here in WP. I quit and continued in Squarespace. Now I want to build a new site in WP, but the remains of the old website are blocking it. I constantly get a popup to check my JetPack Connections in WP admin. This takes to an old 404 site and I can’t continue from there. Does anyone know what’s going on? Thanks

I have disconnected that site from your account, which will remove that problem. :)
If you’re just starting out with WordPress.com, I recommend you go through our new user’s guide: https://wordpress.com/learn/
In just a few quick steps, you’ll learn about all the best and most useful features of WordPress.com, with lots of screenshots and videos.
You can also browse our support documentation at https://wordpress.com/support/

Is my WP admin now in default mode? I can’t upload the Divi theme.
And is Jetpack installed?I’ll tell you what I would like to do. I own a 3rd part hosted domain, which is currently running with a website on Squarespace. In the near future, once I have built a new site in WP, I would like to transfer the new site to that domain running on WP (either .com or .org). For WP.org you need to work via the hosting company and I need to transfer the A-records first. So that’s why I thought to build the website first in WP.com on a free (place holding) domain and later transfer it to my domain in WP.org. Is that possible and would you recommend it to do it like that?
Many thanks!
Floris

Hi there,
I’ll tell you what I would like to do. Plenty of site owners here do that, yes. They get their site set up on the “WordPress.com” URL we assign the site, and when they are ready to “launch” it they connect the final URL.
In this way you can basically set your site up here in private, and when you are ready to connect your domain it will replace your Squarespace site with then new site you set up here on WordPress.com (using the same address now.)
Please note that to use an outside domain you will need one of the plans listed here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
I can’t upload the Divi theme.
And is Jetpack installed?Unlike self-hosted WordPress sites—which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.—on WordPress.com you need our Business plan (or higher) to be able to upload plugins and/or themes. Jetpack is built in however, even on our free sites.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
