trying to change my blog address to match the name of the blog

  • Unknown's avatar

trying to change my blog address to match the name of the blog but discovered it was being “used” sort of. Someone started a blog in 2011 but never did anything with it on wordpress. No posts, no anything. But they are using the name. Is there anything I can do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

hope in the healing is the name of the blog

You could try leaving a comment on that blog, if they haven’t put in a contact form or contact info. Ask if they’re interested in giving or selling you the URL. If not, why not use the Custom Domain upgrade to get a new URL altogether, whatever.com or whatever you like?

I will try that, thank you for your time!!

Also keep in mind that while there may be no blog, it could be an account being used for jetpack (on WordPress.org); or to access a private account as a user, contributor, author, or editor, or even as an administrator.

Thanks, I didn’t think of that either :) Although next to the title of the blog it says Hope in the Healing: A Story of Hope in the Midst of a Stillbirth. So it makes you think they sure had intention of doing something useful with it. But the date was August of 2011 and there are no entries or articles of any kind. I posted a question in the comments to see if anyone will respond so we will see.

I am new to blogging but will probably have to go to getting my own domain name, not sure what that will cost me but if I understood correctly when I signed up I can transfer what I have already set up in WordPress if I decide to do that. I will now try to figure that out! :) Thank you all for your help!

You can have your own domain name and remain hosted here on WordPress.com for free. No transfer of your blog because you will still be here on wp.com. The upgrade is called domain mapping.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Registering a .com, .org, or .net domain through WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your blog starts at $18.00 per domain and per year, or $25.00 per domain and per year for a .me domain. For $8.00 more, you can also make the domain registration private.

You can also, of course, pay for hosting, purchase a domain name and find software to make your site work (WordPress.ORG software is free and there are thousands of templates and plugins as well.). Then you can transfer your blog / site via the export tool in your dashboard.

But if you are not very tech savy about the internet, IMO, I’d advise you to stay with wp.COM where all the big problems are taken care of.

Here is an article about the difference between the various sorts of WordPress:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Okay. Looking more closely at your question, I see that you have already mapped your domain to your wordpress blog.
healingoil.wordpress.com = your current wordpress.com site hopeinthehealing.com/ = the domain mapped to your wp.com site

When someone clicks on http://hopeinthehealing.com your domain mapping points to your free-hosted blog / site without them ever realizing underlying name is healingoil.wordpress.com. That is working as you want it to: your readers identify you as hopeinthehealing.com

The problem is that you have linked your username to hopeinthehealing.wordpress.com, so if you comment somewhere (including here in these forums) your name is linked to the site about the stillbirth.

    Solution:
change your username link to your blog:
(not to that other person’s blog)
Go into your dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to ‘Account Details’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes. The address of your blog is http://healingoil.wordpress.com

(I think you could also use the domain mapped name as the link to your username: http://hopeinthehealing.com/ but I’m not sure)

Oh my! Thank you so much for helping me! I am on the road today and just now reading your message. I’m a little confused but going to download the WordPress app so my husband can look at it and see if he can figure it out. We may need you later :)

We volunteers are here whenever you need help: just ask! It’s always nice to know if what we advise is useful or not to keep (me) us posted on how it works.

A lot of this stuff seems opaque when you look at it (even to me, and I’ve been here seven years) but once you work through the steps it’s simple enough. It just takes a lot of words to explain the steps.

And the jargon is not like the French language is, where words are defined definitely and one can look them up in a lexicon / dictionary for the official meanings. I only recently discovered that there is a difference between “home page” and “front page.” Apparently!

I’m not quite clear on that yet, but apparently is so…

Thank you all so much, I did get it all changed thanks to your clear directions! I am learning…slowly! I truly appreciate the help!
