Trying to charge me for my own domain when cancelling premium

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am tryingt o cancel my premium upgrade however it’s saying if I want to keep my domain name (folkmama.com) I will have to pay $13 a year.

I already bought and owned this domain name before joining wordpress.com and never switched ownership over to them.

Whye is it saying this? I am worried wordpress.com somehow has my domain name and I will lose it.

    Cheers,

    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

The $13 a year charge is for the domain mapping upgrade.

If you want to use your domain name (folkmama.com) with your WordPress.com site you’ll need to pay for the upgrade. But you won’t lose your domain name if you don’t pay it. You name is registered with enom.com according to Who.is.

    Hi!
    Thanks for the reply.
However that’s not what it says.
    It says:
“Your plan includes the domain “folkmama.com”, WordPress.com can only offer a limited refund on domains – cancellations must be requested within 48 hours of domain registration.

Just cancel the plan, and keep “folkmama.com”
The domain folkmama.com costs $13.00 to register. You have already paid $0.00 for your plan, so to keep folkmama.com you will need to pay an extra $13.00.”

Cancel the plan and the domain”
    Thanks,
    Katie

I also forgot to say – when I cancel I am not receiving the confirmation email. Thanks for your help.

Since folkmama.com is not hosted on WordPress.com, you don’t need the mapping.

As the wording is confusing, I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance.

Ah, someone already did so. :) Cheers and be patient for Staff’s assistance.

    Hi mamabruja,

I have reviewed your account, your WordPress.com Premium Plan and Domain Mapping upgrade have been canceled and refunded.

The warning you see is to prevent users from being confused when their domain mapping stops working. If the domain is registered outside of WordPress.com as is the case for your domain, we have no control over it.

If you have any other questions let us know.
