Trying to copy images from wordpress.com to wordpress.org using wget
-
As I understand it is not possible to copy images from a wordpress.com site to a new wordpress.org self-hosted site using the techniques at Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site, I have been trying wget (on Ubuntu). The command:
wget -rpEk -nH -l 8 --random-wait -nv -P "./New/" -e robots=off --limit-rate=20k --no-cookies --ignore-length https://noticeboards.wordpress.com 2>"./Current/wgeterr.log"
has some success but:
(a) it gets jpg files from 2008 – 2010 only
(b) files are named e.g.
“./New/files/2010/01/oxfordcastle.jpg?w=840”
“./New/files/2010/01/oxfordcastle.jpg?w=125”Any suggestions? Renaming those files could be tedious. Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As we provide support only for the WordPress.COM end of things I am pretty sure you will be directed to post to WordPress.ORG support/ forums for help at http://wordpress.org/support/

Thanks. Although the main problem is that I am not getting all the files I need off wordpress.com. Once I have got them on my computer, I can handle getting them onto a new wordpress.org self-hosted site.

Hi there,
As I understand it is not possible to copy images from a wordpress.com site to a new wordpress.org self-hosted site using the techniques at Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site
When you follow the steps in that guide and import your site’s content into the self-hosted site, the WordPress importer will automatically grab all of the images and import them as part of that import process. There’s no need to separately download and move those images.
If the importer on your self-hosted site isn’t working for you, I’d recommend posting to the WordPress.org forums, as timethief mentioned. That’s the best place to get tips for managing self-hosted sites, including dealing with the import process there.

Thanks for the info. I hadn’t realised that the WordPress importer had been improved. My next step will be to install WordPress on my local computer and try and import the blog.

I succeeded in installing WordPress 4.2.2 and importing the xml file. The user interface isn’t the same as the one shown at https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/5/.
You have to install a plugin first called wordpress-importer. I ticked the box “Download and import file attachments” and it created my blog with all my images from wordpress.com.
It’s worth noting that the plugin says “Choose a file from your computer: (Maximum size: 2 MB)” which could be a problem for some people.
It’s also worth noting that a lot of reviews of the plugin say it doesn’t work at all, especially when uploading to a remote site. This website is quite interesting.
Thanks again.

Correct – when you first go to Tools -> Import on your self-hosted site, you will be asked to add a plugin.
It’s worth noting that the plugin says “Choose a file from your computer: (Maximum size: 2 MB)” which could be a problem for some people.
The plugin decides what the maximum file size for your setup is. For example, on my self-hosted site, the maximum file size is 64MB. You can manually adjust this though. Here’s a related support thread:

I’ve got that now. I had assumed that the limit referred to .xml import files in particular. Thanks again.
