Trying to create a custom subdomain – what is the charge?

I currently have a free wordpress.com blog, psychophotographer.wordpress.com. I want to create a sub-domain, blog.straubephoto.com that is linked to my straubephoto.com website. Every where I try to go, I see a different charge to do this! One screen was automatically charging me $99 for a plan, then I found different instructions which took me to a $36.00 ($2.99/month) plan – what’s going on?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Map a subdomain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog – if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com).
