Trying to create a new private blog site and it not working like one I follow.

When my niece created a blog using your platform I received an invitation and just clicked invite and that was it, I never had to create pass word with world press or anything and i automatically began getting email notification when she did a new post. I am trying to create same and tested it on my husbands email address and he had to do several steps including pass words, etc. then he did not receive any email notification when I did a test post. the help says you have to adjust for that in your reader, I never did anything like that with my nieces site. What’s up, getting really frustrated. RK

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First, really sorry for the frustration! Happy to help you get this setup.

Just to make sure we’re on the same page, you’re referring to rernak.wordpress.com. Correct?

To clarify, if you invite a user to view your private blog that already has a WordPress.com account, they will not be asked to create an account or set a password. However, if your husband didn’t already have a WordPress.com account, he would have been asked to create one in order to see your private blog. Could you let me know his email address so I can double-check? Please note, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.

When you want someone new to be able to see your private blog and receive updates, you’ll need to follow these steps:

    1. Invite them via this page:

    https://rernak.wordpress.com/wp-admin/users.php?page=wpcom-invite-users&user-role=follower

    2. If they already have an account at WordPress.com, they’ll just need to click the “Accept” link in their email and login to their WordPress.com account. If they don’t have an account, they’ll have to create one and then accept.

    3. Once they accept, they’ll need to visit your site and click the follow icon in the top right-hand corner shown in the screenshot here:

But is there or was there a simpler system because I’m fairly sure I never had to do all that for my nieces site. Presently I get an email anytime she does a new post and I can see the post in the email or click on a link and view it on her site. In fact I know I never created a world press account to be a follower for her site because I had to create one just yesterday to start the process of building mine and it would have been the same email. And I’m fairly sure I hadn’t ever accessed the World press web site before yesterday, I didn’t recognize it at all.

I’m afraid there isn’t a simpler method. In order to access a private blog, the reader will have to have a WordPress.com account. Otherwise, they will not be able to view your site. The alternative would be to not make your site private. Then, this step would not be necessary.

I’m happy to walk you through the process for a follower so we can make sure this is working correctly! Just let me know the email address of someone you would like to invite. Again, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.

So, if I check the middle option, not totally public but not private would people still be able to subscribe and receive email notification when I make new posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

Definitely! The middle option allows anyone to visit your site. However, it asks search engines not to index your content meaning ideally your blog posts wouldn’t appear in search results. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee this as search engines can choose to ignore this.

If you choose this setting, readers will have several ways of following your site, but here are the two primary methods:

    1. WordPress.com users (readers that are logged into WordPress.com) will see a follow button in the top admin bar. If they click that, they’ll automatically receive blog updates.

    2. Logged-out users will see a subscription form in the lower right-hand corner of your site. They can enter their email address their to subscribe.

If you would like to make it even easier, you can add a Blog Subscription widget to your sidebar here:

    https://rernak.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

Then, readers would see the same options on your sidebar (WordPress.com users would see the Follow button; Logged-out users would see an email field).
