  Hi there:

  Could you try creating a free site first, then signing up for the monthly Personal plan? You can skip the domain choice when you set the site up and be assigned a free *.wordpress.com URL.

  Let us know if you still have trouble!

  got as far as “checkout” but there is NO provision to edit name (I’d accidently gotten extraneous characters)

  or to cancel order- where is the damn “cancel order” button anyway?

  This site is extremely frustrating…. poorly designed… still stuck

  If you weren’t given an option to register a subdomain you searched for, it’s likely because it’s already taken.
  You can change your site’s free address as explained here, or you can register a custom domain at any moment:

  https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/.

  As for canceling your order, you’ll want to click on the trash bin icon next to the plan you want to remove:
