Trying to delete wordpress.com account.

We moved our wordpress.com account to managed .org hosting elsewhere and ended our subscription. This has left a stranded old version of the site (http://bylinetimes.wpcomstaging.com/) which we need to remove. When I follow the instructions via Settings to ‘Delete this site’ it says to contact support but that button brings me here, to posting in the public forums. How can I get this site shut down?!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Although you’re an administrator to that site, you’re not the owner. Please have the owner of that site to contact us and then we’ll remove the staging site.

OK, we’ll do that now. It’ll be on this public forum too because that’s the only link we get… Thanks.

Hi! Thanks. As requested, we authorise the removal of the wordpress.com staging site.

Among other things it seems to be interfering with Jetpack stats on the current bylinetimes.com site (this was previously the domain name of the .com), so maybe they have got mixed together.

We don’t need the data in the old site, we already imported it.

  • Perfect. That site can be deleted from the account that you used to post the last reply. Go here: https://wordpress.com/settings/general/bylinetimes.com

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see in red, a Delete Site link.

Just a reminder this should be considered permanent. The site can only be restored for 30 days if you change your mind. Also, make sure that you have all the site content (posts, pages) and images that you need for the future. Once deleted you can’t create an export of such items.

Liz, the “Delete Site” link doesn’t appear for me (or any of us who have access).

If I follow your link I reach the Settings page, and from there I can see Site Tools > Delete your site permanently. Following that, I get to the Delete page, and am offered to Export Content, and then see the Delete Site section warning about the site becoming unavailable and what will be removed. But the only link/action is a Contact Support button leading to these public forums. It’s a dead end.

Please, we really need to get this old Staging site removed urgently, as it’s causing issues with SEO.

  • It looks like, even though the subscriptions were removed, the site acted as if it was still on Business plan – that’s why you were not able to remove it.

I’ve fixed that now and I see the Delete Site button appearing correctly on the site. Can you please confirm you were able to remove the site now?

    Hi, thanks for the help.

We managed to delete the old staging site but it has had an unwanted consequence. We have now lost the Jetpack statistics for our self-hosted site.

I am imagining that because we moved to a self-hosted site keeping our domain, there was some conflict or overlap meaning that our self-hosted wp stats were incorrectly linked with the staging/old wp.com account.

How can we recover our historic statistics?

  • We can fix that for you. What is the URL of the site now?

Thanks, your colleague did it for us via email
    support. All good now.

  • Super! Thank you for the update & enjoy your weekend!
