Trying to edit Chris Pearson’s Cutline

  • Unknown's avatar

Greetings from Dhaka. I’m using Chris Pearson’s CUTLINE theme. Have purchased the upgrade and am making changes to the CSS. So I’ve adjusted the width, etc. Straight forward. But there seem to be some underlying functions that I can’t edit at all (there seem to be no references to it in Pearson’s CSS I pulled up).

    E.g.,
    1. Cutline only displays the last 10 entries under RECENT ENTRIES, I want to bump up this #
    2. Want to change “Recent Entries” text to some other text

Is this just something hardwired into WordPress (i.e., even Pearson couldn’t change it) and I’m just stuck with it.

T’m implementing it here, halfway done but now stuck with this annoying stuff.

I would ask Pearson, but oddly he does not seem to list his email on http://www.pearsonified.com

You can change the Recent Entries under your Widgets settings in the Dashboard. Just load the Recent Posts widget and change the name to whatever you want. You can have up to 15 recent entries.

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. You can change the number of entries shown in the recent posts widget by going to design > widgets click on the “edit” link on the widget, change the number, click the “change” button and then click the save changes button at the bottom of the sidebar widget list.

    2. Again, you can change the title by editing the widget under design > widgets.

Many of the widgets have settings that you can get to by clicking “edit” on the widget at design > widgets.

Ok, that works, but it creates an interesting new issue.

In Cutline’s original setup, sidebar has
    SEARCH
    RECENT ENTRIES
    LINK

When I add the RECENT ENTRIES widget, change it to 15 entries, and rename it, it implements that but also erases SEARCH and LINK. So unlike when we edit CSS and it only over-writes the portion we have edited, and leaves rest of it intact, this change wipes out the entire previous Sidebar CSS.

And then if I try to add LINKS widget, it lets me do it but calls it BLOGROLL (which I’ve always thought was a dumb name), and doesn’t let me edit it at all.

Not end of the world, but odd.

    shobak,

Every theme has a default widget setting that loads a couple of widgets automatically so that your sidebar is never empty.

When you load your first widget, WordPress drops the default widget set and activates the selected widget and puts it in the sidebar. So, you see the three or four widgets disappear and only one widget is in the sidebar.

Simply go to your Widget settings and add the widgets that you want.

As to Blogroll…your Blogroll uses Categories. Blogroll is the main default category that all links automatically load under. You need to create custom categories. Once you do, your custom categories will overwrite the default.

Go to Manage > Links and add a new category titled “Links.” Then add all your links to this category. Save changes and look at your sidebar. Blogroll should be replaced by Links.

Before you actually add widgets to the sidebar in design > widgets, what you are seeing is a default sample set so that you can have an idea of what the theme looks like with widgets. Once you add a widget, the sample set disappears. Simply add the other widgets you want.

The name of the “links” widget is determined by the category that you assign to the links that you add. If you want it to display “links” then simply edit each of your links under manage > links and create and assign a “links” category to them.

Blogroll is the default links category. Once you create your new “links” category, then go to settings > general, scroll down and set the default “links” category to the one you want to use most of the time.

    The Blogroll

Perfect. Last question for the night, can I also rename the text for “Home Page” link (which is called FRONT PAGE in Cutline) and “More” link (which is called KEEP READING here).

  • Unknown's avatar

Yup…simply navigate to the Edit section for each Page and re-title them to your liking. Then, be sure to change the PermaLink to reflect the change in title. Permalinks are located under the title. There is an Edit Permalink link that you can click.

By the way, a lot of your basic questions can be answered here:

    FAQ

There is a lot of great info to read and browse through.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, that is set in the underlying theme files and we do not have access to those files.

  • Unknown's avatar

tsp, what is set in the theme files? Titles of pages or more tags?

  • Unknown's avatar

The title of the main page, which in this case is the “front page” in cutline. The “front page” does not show up under manage > pages so there is no way to edit the name. The main blog page is never editable unless you have access to the underlying theme files.

  • Unknown's avatar

More tag text can be overridden as explained in the FAQ that you provided.

  • Unknown's avatar

TSP means that the “Home Page” link (by default on top of every page in Cutline) is set in underlying theme files (either WordPress root or Cutline’s root) which we don’t have access to.

  • Unknown's avatar

I had read the MORE faq already, but it said: “You will need to customize the message for each post; you cannot declare a global message that will take effect on each and every post of your blog that uses the More tag.” Was hoping there was a global workaround.

  • Unknown's avatar

Right…Cutline does not allow you edit the title “Front Page” to something else. Too bad for shobak. Try another theme…there are many that do allow you to edit titles as you desire.

  • Unknown's avatar

You are never allowed to edit the title of the main blog page. That is always set in the underlying theme files and again, we do not have access to those.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, no global custom more tag…yet. Contact support and add a recommendation. They may think that is a worthy feature to add.

  • Unknown's avatar

tsp, you are right. I did not make myself clear. I meant that you can create custom home pages that are titled how you want them, but as you say the links cannot be edited. Home will always be Home, no matter what you title it…Sorry for the miscom. Sometimes I type too fast. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

No, there is no way to do it globally. You will have to edit the HTML of the more tag each time.

Also read this post on onecoolsite about keeping yourself out of trouble with the more tag: http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/08/21/avoiding-the-more-tag-woes/ . It can really mess things up if you aren’t careful.
