Trying to figure out the custom menus and categories
-
I’ve been on this for a few hours and have searched the site, but am really struggling.
I’m trying to create a website where I can create 5 different pages in my top navigation. Within each of those pages, I’d like to have a listing of new and ongoing articles that I’m going to include on that page. However, using many of the templates, you can only see each of those individual articles by clicking on the top navigation and clicking the link from there. I’d like each page to have the articles listed so users can browse each of the five pages.
I figured that this could be done using custom menus – but perhaps I’m wrong. It is my understanding that if I create a category, they could be used as the top nav and then each new post could be applied to that category, or essentially, that page of the website.
Perhaps I’m out to lunch with this, but I’ve gone through the process of creating a ‘main menu’ in the custom menu section and then adding the 5 categories to it. However, nothing is appearing in the top nav menu, so I’m obviously off on something.
Anyway, any help that will help me get to what I’m trying to do with the website would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. The good news is that you understood right away what some people have a hard time understanding: that you cannot post on pages, but that you can create categories to organize your posts. (For the benefit of anyone else reading this, here’s a useful article about this: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/ )
However, those categories won’t appear unless you create a custom menu (made of categories) and activate it:

So this is where I get confused. The explanation for custom menus when I read it seems incomplete. Do I create a custom menu for each page in my top nav and then add the same category to that custom menu? From there, when I create a new post, I simply select the category (or in my case – the page) I want the post to appear on?

Thanks airodyssey. I really appreciate the help. I finally got it but have one more quick question. Is it possible to change the page attributes or the template of that ‘page’ or category so that it’s a full page and not the default template like I can when I create a true static page?
