Trying to figure out Wp.com Connect?

  • Unknown's avatar

In the latest Jetpack update, it offered WordPress.com connect to my .org website. I went through the process, and am pretty sure I did it correctly.

    However I have 2 issues:

    1) I have no idea what this actually does. Am I just supposed to be able to log in on my /wp-admin ? Does this allow my posts to show up on the .com Reader? No adequate explanation was really provided.

    2) I see no difference. Even when logged into my .com account, and then go to my /wp-admin login, I am asked for my usual login and there is an extra button again offering to connect to WordPress.com.

I click this button, then I click ‘Authorize’ Then, nothing happens. It brings me back to my /wp-admin page with the required login and the “Connect to WordPress.com” button still there.

Could someone please clear this up for me?

    Thanks and regards,
    Ben

  • Howdy,

Yes, WPCC is to allow you to login to your WordPress.org using your WordPress.com site. This can be good for various reasons. For example, if you use many different WordPress.org sites, you can avoid having to log in multiple times throughout the day as well as being able to enable two-step authentication on on your WordPress.com account to help secure your .org site.

Your second point is unexpected behavior that we have heard from a couple of folks, but are researching the issue further. Do you have any two-step authentications plugins installed?

    Thanks for your questions.

“Almost done. Before WordPress.com Connect can finish activating, you’ll need to register your website as an application on WordPress.com”

I’m also seeing this for the first time today, followed by (if you scroll down to the bottom of wordpress.org site settings):

    <WordPress.com Connect

Visit WordPress.com to register a new WPCC client id and secret key.

    WPCC Client ID

    WPCC Client Secret>

Couldn’t find anywhere in my wordpress.com account settings that I could do so.

  • Hi Jen,

You can create a new application by visiting http://developer.wordpress.com and clicking on the “My Applications” link at the top.

Thanks very much kraftbj, I’ll do that!

I have one WP.com account. What will this “Connect” service do for me? It promises me more visibility, but how? Do I give up any control over my site?

Obviously I’m confused and need some clarification!

    Thanks!

    But I don’t have a WordPress.org account. So should I ignore WPCC?

I could use some clarification on one thing. Does it allow my posts to show on wordpress.com’s Reader?

Thanks in advance for a simple answer :)

WordPress.ORG blogs are not a part of the free hosted WordPress.com community. Hence the post to not appear under the WordPress.COM topics pages. We can add any URL to the blogs we follow. It does not have to be the URL of a free hosted WordPress.COM site.

  • @lornasvoice – This is regarding a feature of Jetpack for WordPress.org sites, which allow you or other users to login using your WordPress.com credentials. If you don’t have a site based on WordPress.org, it would not apply to you.

@theskinnybranch – WPCC doesn’t impact the reader, no. Like timethief said, the WordPress.com reader can be used with any site, though using the Jetpack Subscriptions feature can help that along.

Also, please note that Jetpack isn’t directly supported in the forums here. Jetpack questions should be directed to the plugin’s support forums at http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

The Jetpack team monitors that forum and can provide the most accurate information. :-)

    Cheers!

Thanks for getting back to me. It seems like WPCC is mainly for WP.org users. I’ll leave it alone because it doesn’t apply to me.

Again, you have all been very helpful!

That’s a capcha. You’re supposed to answer the simple math problem to prove you’re human. I guess you’re not human.

It was really very easy. I am thankful for the guidance. it solved my problem.

    hi
i’ve got the same issue as archaeis

i’m trying to connect to my self hosted website (www.fromtheskies.it) through “Connect with WordPress.com” service

i’ve created an application on developer.wordpress.com, and i’ve copied the “Client ID” and “Client Secret” in options-general -> wpcc-sign-on-section of my website

    these are the OAuth settings:
    Redirect URL http://www.fromtheskies.it
    Type Native

    is it ok?

i’ve also created another application with “type: web”, but nothing changes

I click the “Connect with WordPress.com” button on /wp-admin, then I click ‘Authorize’ then, nothing happens. It brings me back to my /wp-admin page with the required login and the “Connect to WordPress.com” button still there. – same as archaeis –

    thanks

  • Hi,

Can you submit that as an issue in the Jetpack forums at http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack ?

    Thanks!
