Trying to find the right theme/layout…
-
Hi! I’m hoping to have my page use a picture of mine that I uploaded as the background, but I’d like to have some sort of introduction at the top that is static, with my most recent posts below that. My page is charliehsills.wordpress.com. I want to continue using the same picture in the background if possible – I’m thinking I might just need a new layout? Will changing the layout impact the posts that I’ve made to date? Thanks very much!! – Harry

Hi Harry,
My page is charliehsills.wordpress.com. I want to continue using the same picture in the background if possible
It looks like the image you have used for your header image is too small which is why it isn’t filling the space completely. It’s 1080px × 1078px but theme documentation for Coherent recommends a header image size of 2000px × 1500px pixels. If you have that image in a larger size, it should fill the header.
I’d like to have some sort of introduction at the top that is static
From the Customizer, you can add a Tagline — this is short description of your site and would be a good place to put your introduction if it’s not too long.
To access the Customizer from the dashboard, you can go to My Sites → Themes → Customize. Once there click Site Identity and add your Tagline.
I’m thinking I might just need a new layout? Will changing the layout impact the posts that I’ve made to date?
If you want more flexibility than this theme provides, you can look for an alternative in our Theme Showcase:
A theme controls the general look and feel of your site including things like page layout, widget locations, and default font and colour choices. If you change theme you won’t lose any posts or pages.
Come back to me if you have any questions!

Gemma – thank you so much for the input! Unfortunately, no matter what I try using as a header image, one never shows up after I update my page. The picture that you see on my page is actually a custom background, not a header, which is probably why I can’t get it to fit or to transition from computer screen to mobile viewing well. Any tips?
thanks again!

Hi Harry,
no matter what I try using as a header image, one never shows up after I update my page
Sometimes this can be caused by your site cache. I’ve just cleared it for you to see if that helps — you can try and save a new header image again. Let me know if this does the trick.
The picture that you see on my page is actually a custom background, not a header, which is probably why I can’t get it to fit or to transition from computer screen to mobile viewing well.
The Coherent theme doesn’t scale background images, which is why the photo is not transitioning well from desktop to mobile. The good news is there are other themes that do :)
Afterlight features a scalable custom background image:

Bushwick displays a large header image and featured images on the left:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/bushwick/
Resonar displays a large featured images at the top of posts:

With Resonar, creating a sticky post would create a post with a large featured image at the top.
Have a look at the theme demos and let me know your thoughts.
Also, congratulations!
