Trying to forward a domain name registered at WordPress.com
-
We have a domain name myname.net and we use a free wordpress.com website.
We have a new domain myname.online over on 1and1.com to which I now wish to forward the existing myname.net on wordpress.com.
Every time I follow the instructions go into DNS record maint. the ability to edit the existing A record is greyed out – no little edit pencil.
There is no convenient forward function I can find on wordpress.com (either html or frame) so I am unable to see how to set up the forward of my existing domain name.

Forwarding is not supported. WordPress.COM blogs do not have permanent IP addresses. https://en.support.wordpress.com/ip-addresses/

As timethief mentioned, you will need to map your domain over to WordPress.com. We do not support domain forwarding.

Thanks; I found the solution with help from 1and1. It’s not obvious at first, but for future reference.
In 1and1 control panel, to to transfer domain.
At the bottom there is a ‘create external domain’ option – cost is $0
Create the domain name you want to have resolved to 1and1
Order it/save it.
Map this new domain name to your site on 1and 1.
Go back to wordpress.com and edit DNS
Use custom name servers to point to the 1and1 name servers – save it.You’re done. Cost nothing and domain name now resolves to 1and1 website.
And, if things go horribly wrong, just revert to default wordpress.com name servers and your back to your old website at wordpress.com.
