Trying to get a domain name – problems
-
I’ve been trying to get a domain name through WP and experiencing difficulty. I enter the domain I want (which is not registered), the server has a think about it, then tells me “We were unable to verify that ########.### is pointing to WordPress.com. If you own this domain, follow the directions below to get it ready for your blog. If you don’t own it, try a different name to see if something else is available. If the domain is available, you may be able to register it with another registrar and then map it to your blog.” (My blanking out).
I’ve looked at this before when I was seeing if WP was going to do the job for me, and it took me through to another page where I could buy the credits and obtain the domain. Now it’s not doing this. At the time I wasn’t ready for a domain name, so did not proceed with the transaction
Does WP have a problem, or changed the way it handles domain names, or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you for your assistance.

I had this problem myself just yesterday. Here is a link to a thread that will help:

Actually, I’m still having this problem. Regardless of what URL I try to add, I can’t get redirected to the Paypal screen to buy the necessary credits. My conclusion: The whole domain name upgrade process is completely retarded and needs to be overhauled.

I am also having this problem. I couldn’t find any way to buy the credits in advance. The FAQ suggested going to Dashboard–>Options–>Domains, and then type in the desired domain. I did exactly that, but it didn’t allow me to purchase credits and then the domain. I got the exact same message cyclingjase mentioned above. The domain I’m looking for is available, so that’s not the problem.
Am I doing something wrong or is there something else going on?

seanbest, I found that thread, but didn’t find the advise helpful at all. But thanks for pointing it out. And I’ve yet to find the link to buy credits. It’s not where people on other threads have been saying.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one having problems.

Is it possible that domain name is not available now? If it is, I would clear all cache on your computer and try it again. If the domain is available, it is supposed to show up to be able to purchase it. Another option is register the domain with another registrar and then change the name servers to wordpress.com and then add the domain mapping. I did that with all my domains.

Whatever the problem was, it’s fixed now. I just tried it for the fun of it, and it went through easy as. I am now the proud owner of a domain name!
