Trying to get a new start and I need some help.

    I am looking to start a new blog (new name, new domain). I do not want to lose the content I have created (I am not planning on deleting). I just want to be able to build on what I have done, but head in a new direction. I just don’t know what to do about the broken links that may occur or if I should worry about that.

    I am trying to decide what would be the best thing to do?

    • Should I just change the domain and keep going in the new direction?
    • Should I export my old blog and then make the old one private?
    • Should I leave it alone and just start the new blog?

    I also do not know what the redirect will do. I have read the information page and what the forums has to offer, but have not found how this handles old links. Does it just point to the new domain? Or does it remap the domain to the new one, so it shows newdomain.com/information when the old links is clicked on.

    I don’t understand the mechanics of the redirect upgrade.

    This may be easier than I feel it is, but I am at a loss as to what to do. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi there. To start a new blog that still contains your existing content you have two options:

    Change the blog address. This will move your entire blog, content, theme, everything, to a new URL. Permalinks of posts are automatically updated to reflect the new URL. (This will also remove the content from the old address, but it will give you the option to either keep or delete the old URL. I recommend keeping it and setting it to private as deleted URLs can never be recovered.) Any followers you have should make the move with you. http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

    Create a new blog and export/import your content. More steps, but the end result is basically the same, except that your followers won’t move with you. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-between-wordpress-com-blogs

    In both cases it would be a good idea to get the Site Redirect upgrade as bookmarks and links to your blog on other websites will still point to the old URL. The Site Redirect automatically sends people to the new address, should they click on a link pointing to the old address. The site redirect does not expire like other upgrades.

    Also keep in mind that in both cases search engines will have to re-index your site from scratch, so you’re going to take a hit in search rankings until your site is re-indexed, which can take up to six weeks I’m told.
