Trying to get back my domain

    Hi. I recently switched to Squarespace for my site, and my domain should be expired, but Squarespace is saying it’s still taken. I need to know what’s going on with it so I can make this switch. Please help. The domain name is mandystigant.com. I have closed down my wordpress site and won’t be back, but I need the domain name attached to my new site.

    Hi @mandystigant,

    To officially check if your domain is still taken, check your “Manage Purchases” section within your Dashboard here: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

    If the domain has officially expired, it could still be caught up within the expiration process: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

    If none of the above are an issue, you can follow these articles to transfer your domain to Squarespace:

    Hi there,

    Expired domains are not released immediately, but go through a process of around 80 days before they’re released again. Your domain is currently in the second-to-last phase of this process, called redemption. It can still be a few weeks before that domain becomes available again.

    Also note that once it becomes available, ANYONE will be able to buy it again. If your domain is on back-order at a dropcatch service, that service will register the domain the moment it’s released, and then you won’t be able to get it back again at all.

    If you still want to use that domain you should not have allowed it to expire. Cancelling a domain or letting it expire puts you at the very real risk of never being able to use that domain again. If you wanted to continue using this domain at another provider, you could instead have transferred it there, while retaining full ownership of the domain.

    If you still want to do that, you can. We can still recover the domain for you from redemption, but we have to pay the domain registry $80 to get the domain back at this point. So if you agree to that fee, along with the regular renewal cost of the domain, we can try to get it back for you.

    Once the domain is restored, we can then help you transfer the registration to Squarespace.

    @mikabenjamin,

    The Purchases page won’t show someone if their domain is taken. It will only show if they currently have an active subscription for the domain, which the OP hasn’t had since they cancelled this domain in February.
