trying to import existing external WP site to wordpress.com site

I am trying to migrate my existing site to WordPress.com and I’m using the Import > Import Content from WordPress tool, but it says it is already hosted by wordpress.com

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think part of the issue may be that the current site is hosted on a WordPress.com reseller. I want to move this site to WordPress.com itself and get out of the reseller hosting.

    The site is precommercial.com

  • Hi there,

To confirm, you are using the migration option we suggest here?

Use the Move to WordPress.com plugin to migrate a self-hosted WordPress site to WordPress.com. Follow the steps in this guide to import your site (including your content, media, plugins, and theme) directly from your wp-admin dashboard. Prerequisites To follow the steps in this guide, you will need: Your source site: a WordPress site with any other hosting provider (referred to as a se

The migration method it sounds like you are describing is one that we recommend if you want to make a “content only” import. Instead it sounds like you may wish to move an exact copy of the site at precommercial.com including all design preferences, plugins, etc. yes?

If so please use the “Move to WordPress.com” plugin recommended in the guide above, which will migrate an exact copy of your site to the staging address we provide.

Once the migration is complete, and you have confirmed that the copy we have on WordPress.com is identical to the one you have hosted on domain.com, then you can connect precommercial.com to us, which will seamlessly launch your WordPress.com site in place of the current one.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the reply — the problem is that my source site is on a managed platform, and I do not have the ability to add plugins. I only have been able to get two ZIP files from the admins: 1) a ZIP of the site files (the PHP files, SQL database, etc. in the standard WP folder structure); and 2) a ZIP file of the XML content.

Is there a way to upload the raw files to my WordPress.com instance?

If it helps, it looks like my current (old) WordPress site resides on wpengine.com and my current host is a reseller of WP Engine services.

  • Hi again,

Is there a way to upload the raw files to my WordPress.com instance?

It it possible, yes. However this method of moving sites is one that we only recommend for experienced web developers. To accomplish this you will need experience with manually modifying your SQL file as well as correctly uploading all core PHP files to your new account via SFTP. Sadly, support staff here does not have the technical experience to help you with this move.

You do have a few options however. One would be to hire a local developer (who is experienced in manual WordPress migrations) to assist you with this move. It’s common enough that a local developer should be able to help.

As a second option you may wish to contact our Built By WordPress.com folks, and our team of experienced developers and designers may be able to help with your move, as well as any changes you wish to make before launching the newly-migrated site to replace the current one.

I am an experienced web developer, but I am not sure how to get cPanel and SFTP access to my WordPress.com account?

  • Thanks for clarifying, that will be very helpful! We do not use cPanel on our managed hosting but you can access SFTP by following the steps here:
