trying to map a domain and be charged correctly for it
-
Hello, we set up some websites with WordPress in January. The domain names were purchased through 1&1. We mapped/pointed the DNS settings from 1&1 to WordPress as instructed. All worked fine. We were charged around $13 for the mapping. That was the only charge.
Our problem is this: we are trying to do the same thing now with another site. We own the domain name (with 1&1). Today we tried to set up our WordPress site. We have already pointed the DNS settings from 1&1 to WordPress. The problem is that it will not give us the option to pay the ~$13 one time. Instead, all of our options are ‘free’ (which means we cannot use our domain), $99 a year, or $124 a year. We are simply trying to use the same option we had earlier this year = the basic blog/site option with you, with a one time charge for the domain mapping. It will not allow us to do this. Please help. Thank you much.

Domains are no longer available for purchase or mapping individually. They are included with WordPress.com Premium. This change has been made as we work to offer the best combination of value and performance for users while still offering a completely free product for those who do not wish to purchase any upgrades.
A great way to go if you are not interested in WordPress.com Premium is to look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org site through a hosting provider such as Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Pressable.

Thank you for the reply.
We have a few fast questions and clarifications.
We have already purchased the domain (last fall). We own it and are not trying to purchase a new one. And, the domain is already pointed at WordPress. As it is already pointed there, it should be able to be used with a WordPress theme.
When did this change occur? The option was available in January/February but now in May it is not?
Thank you.

In order to use a domain with a WordPress.com website, you need to have Domain Mapping set up on the WordPress.com site of things. Domain Mapping is only available as part of WordPress.com Premium.

Yes, that is correct. It is a change that happened earlier this month.
