Trying to point my WordPress-purchased domain to Squarespace.com
-
I am trying to point a domain purchased on WordPress to Squarespace.com. I changed the DNS settings three days ago and the domain is still not pointing to my new Squarespace site. Squarespace is telling me the A record is causing the problem. They say that I should use the “@” symbol, but WordPress doesn’t allow that. I tried entering the full domain as suggested below and no dice. The only string that seems to be okay with the DNS editor is “A www 65.39.205.57”
Any thoughts here?
These are the instructions they gave me:
Step 2 – Create an A RecordBack to top
Within that same Zone File or DNS Management area of your domain provider’s interface, create an A Record which will point the version of your domain without the WWW to our IP Address (65.39.205.57).
Alias – Should be @ or the full domain yourdomain.com
(indicating that yourdomain.com should point to Squarespace)Type – Should be A Record
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using our IP Address)Points To – Should be 65.39.205.57
(this points your domain to our IP Address) -
Howdy,
I’m happy to help with this.
You can find instructions for mapping your WordPress.com domain name to a new host here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/It’s possible you’re entering the A records in the wrong area — there is an Edit DNS area for WordPress.com’s purposes, and a separate area for pointing your domain to a new host (covered the support document linked above).
Give that a read and let me know if you have better luck with it.
Cheers,

Caroline:
Thanks for your reply. I have read this article already. I set up the customer number and password for the domain administration system and did not see any fields where I could set up CNAME or A records. It only allowed for changing the name servers, which Squarespace told me NOT to do.
I then went to the “Edit DNS” page and entered the CNAME and A records as outlined in the instructions. When I went to enter the A record using the Squarespace instructions, the WordPress site rejected them (wouldn’t allow “@” sign in the sub domain string).
Here is a dropbox link to a screenshot showing the error message.

Ahh, it turns out there’s a special procedure for SquareSpace, so I will take care of that for you. Please confirm which of your domains you want to point to SquareSpace and I’ll get that set up. Thanks!

Hi there,
Caroline is out today for the weekend, but I wanted to make sure that your domain got pointed as you had directed us! I had to change your domain’s nameservers to do so, so you may get an automated email about that, but it is now pointed correctly and within the next 1 to 48 hours (worst case scenario) your Squarespace site should come up.
I also transferred over your email records which were pointing towards Google apps. If you are using a different email provider now, let me know and I’ll update the settings!
