Trying to re-enable Gravatar Hovercards, unsuccessfully

  • Unknown's avatar

While hovering over a Gravatar Hovercard profile at a post comment, as a test I selected the option ‘turn off Hovercards.’ I presumed I could toggle it back on immediately. At Discussion Settings > Avatars > Gravat Hovercards, I have the box at ‘View people’s profiles when you mouse over their Gravatars’ checked. It was checked before I selected ‘turn off Hovercards,’ and it was checked after I selected that option, on one profile at a post comment.

The Re-enabling Gravatar Hovercards section of the Gravatar Hovercards support page says:

To re-enable Hovercards that have been disabled with the Turn off hovercards option you will need to delete the cookie nohovercard from the domain .wordpress.com.’
If you are unsure about how to clear individual cookies you can visit this site for details of removing cookies [http://www.aboutcookies.org/Default.aspx?page=2] for various browsers.

However, my browser says it has no cookies saved, despite the fact that I have WordPress.com listed as an exception to ‘Accept third party cookies never’ setting.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi musicdoc1,

When you turn off hovercards for all WordPress.com blogs, that adds a cookie to your browser that disables hovercards for you. Deleting that cookie will make hovercards work for you again. (You may need to refresh the page to see them working.)

I tested in Firefox, and these steps worked for me:

    1. Go to Preferences > Privacy
    2. Click on “remove individual cookies.”
    3. In the Cookies window, search for nohovercard.
    4. Select the nohovercard cookie, and click the Remove Selected button at the bottom.
    5. Refresh the WordPress.com site, and hovercards start working again.

I noticed that Firefox listed the cookie along with the site I was on when the cookie was added (instead of .wordpress.com), so searching for the cookie’s name (nohovercard) is the quickest way to find it there.

If those steps don’t work for you, please let me know!

    @ rachelmcr,

    Hi. Thanks for the response.

    1. Go to Preferences > Privacy
    2. Click on “remove individual cookies.”
    3. In the Cookies window, search for nohovercard.

I was unable to find “Preferences” in Firefox. The only Privacy page in FF that I’m aware of is at Tools > Options > Privacy. At Privacy > History > Show Cookies, there are no cookies listed. The Privacy page I’m on is the one shown in the Mozilla support page Enable and disable cookies that websites use to track your preferences.

I’m sure that my failure to reproduce the steps you outlined is due to my incomplete understanding of how to navigate about Firefox settings pages. But my Google searches for Firefox Preferences have thus far been unhelpful, only leading me back to the support page I linked to above, or other support pages which describe the same Privacy page, and settings options which I’ve been aware of for years.

    However,

I just checked, and hovercards are presently displaying again. I had checked several times before and after reporting the issue over a couple of days, and they weren’t displaying in all my previous attempts until now.

Sorry for the confusion! It sounds like the route to get to that settings page can be different (perhaps depending on whether you’re using Windows or Mac), and the History settings have a different set of options when you select “Use custom settings for history” there. There are more details about those settings here, as well:

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/settings-privacy-browsing-history-do-not-track

In any case, I’m glad the issue with hovercards is resolved for you!

    @ rachelmcr,

The issue is “resolved” only perhaps until I choose to “turn off Hovercards” again. I still have no idea why I couldn’t turn them back on for over 24 hours, if I recall correctly, or what happened (or what I did) that finally resulted in them being restored. I would think one should be able to restore them immediately.

On my end, the recommended steps to delete the nohovercard cookie work for me immediately (even with the setup you mentioned — with my browser is set to not save cookies, and with WordPress.com as an exception). Since the hovercards are now working for you, and I can’t reproduce the problem you encountered, there’s not much more I can do to troubleshoot that issue for now.

If this comes up for you again, I’d be happy to continue troubleshooting it with you. In that case, it would help to know your exact History settings in Firefox so I can investigate what’s going on. (Screenshots of those History settings, the exceptions you set up for WordPress.com cookies, and what you see when you click on “Show Cookies” would help clarify that.)

    Okay, thanks. Will do.
