trying to relearn wp

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi … am trying to update my website as it got out of hand and i couldnt get my head around a few things so it was looking terrible. tackling it all again.

    i have changed the theme and like the potential but i need help with the following please:
    1. how can i have the left hand menu sit with sub-menus hidden beneath its top menu so that it unfolds when you click on it. example collage (sub menu) hidden under all artworks (main menu).

    2. when i am in PAGES editing mode – i cant see all those menu headings – the edit mode is missing all those sub menus (painting, collage, assemblage etc)

    I have more questions but perhaps if i can tackle each as i am able to fix them & understand. site is http://fynearts.com.au/

    many thanks in anticipation.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!

    1. It seems to me that displaying the submenus is a feature of the theme.

    2. Can you confirm that those are pages rather than posts. Check the posts screen and see if those show-up there. If so they are posts not pages (which would explain why they do not appear on your pages screen)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for that pcosta88 – ok yes thats it …. ok … so that works i think … i think that hierarchy of posts is divided into categories so it shows up separately.

    shame about the hierarchy laid out like that and not hidden under the pages – any ideas?

    i will be updating some more on the site tomorrow so no doubt another question or two. thanks for your help in clarifying for me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am not sure. I think it is theme related. You could change themes to see if the subcategories get hidden. If they do, you know that unhidden subcategories are a feature of your theme.

    thanks again pcosta …. questions:
    1. is there any way i can automatically have my email added as a contact to every post? i am posting artworks for sale and rather than doing the buy now buttons from paypal i think i would prefer a link to email that says something like ‘to purchase’ – when i go to create a link it only offers URL option not email. Even if i have to do it manually thats fine but no option that i can see.

    2. in categories … what does ‘slug’ mean?

    3. the menu headings we have now established are pages with post categories making up sub pages however, the menu heading ‘gallery’ is actually a tag ….. ack …is this problematic? in any case i need to tidy it up … do i make it a menu heading or a category? problem is i need to work out which one is my ‘posting’ page.

    getting soooo confused (again) …

    4. the menu ‘portside gallery’ has the address as fynearts.com.au/contact as it used to be the contact page but i changed it … how do i change it so the http address is the same?

    sorry for all the questions – i trawl the help menu and get so confused and waylaid – the help menu IS helping me but i post here when i am really stuck/confused.

    much thanks, always

    1. No, not in WordPress.COM. However:
    One solution could be to just add a link back to your a contact page. WordPress allows you to create a contact form. You can also include that on a page or add it at the bottom of each page/post. Look for the Add Contact Form module on each post/page.
    Notes:
    A. The form is automattically filled out with the user login info. In other words the form is filled out with your login info when you are logged in to WordPress. When I am logged into WordPress and I view your contact form it is automattically filled out with my info. I do NOT see your info.
    B. WordPress suggests using the contact form as opposed to an email. Just posting your email address on your site opens your self-up to all kinds of spammers.
    See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

    2. A slug is the part of your post/pages link. It is located at the end of the link. You can edit that part of the URL.
    See here for more info: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-title-and-permalink-url

    3. I believe because you have at what appears to be a “static” about-me page (that is the front page of your website here: http://fynearts.com.au/) when you create a post you will select a category for the post and it *should* slide into that section. You could create a quick test post and see if works.
    Note A: By creating a “static” post you do hurt your Search Engine rankings as it makes it more difficult for Google and Bing crawlers to crawl your side for new content since the static page never changes.

    4. From what I understand, you need to find the page where this is located in your Dashboard: fynearts.com.au/contact and edit the slug to change it to “portside-gallery”.

    2.

    you have been extremely helpful and most patient pcosta .. thank you.

    the links are great and will see me through the revamping of my site.

    one last thing please – naturally search engine rankings are important and now i understand why my blog (Ginas eye) and fynearts (pinterest, facebook, etc) pops up but not my wordpress. anything i can do?

    i built it this way initially because i just wanted a ‘site’ not a blog and my blog (via blogger) is linked here.

    i was going to move away from wordpress.com and start completely afresh but after researching a couple of them, the learning curve (and the work i have put into this one) drove me back here .

    if you have any ideas about driving search engine i would appreciate it very much. and again a huge THANK YOU !!!

    hmmm … could the static page have a precis /little picture representing my blog that updates each time my blog is updated (i do this pretty much daily-ish) therefore providing search engines with something to grab?

    a rolling update. or something.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, static pages are static. They do not update.

    Hello!

    One of the forum volunteers, Time Thief has a pretty good blog designed to help WordPress.COM users like yourself.

    For your second question, I am not sure but I do know that WordPress notifies search engines when you publish new content (ie come out with a New Page or a New Post).

  • Unknown's avatar

    ok .. thank you both very much – i have heaps to go on with …. much appreciation – have a lovely weekend !

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, WordPress.com does not notify search engines when you publish Pages. Only Posts.

  • Unknown's avatar

    hmmm thanks raincoaster …

    so, would it be a good thing /possible to make my ‘blog posts’ which is the Gallery (all artworks) the landing page? naturally search engine ranking is important.

    i have been searching to see how i did that with the About me page which is the landing page but again i am getting lost. thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, blog posts as the landing page is important to SEO.

    @fynearts,

    how can i have the left hand menu sit with sub-menus hidden beneath its top menu so that it unfolds when you click on it. example collage (sub menu) hidden under all artworks (main menu).

    It’s not possible with this theme. Numerous other themes will display the sub-menu items in drop-down lists below the main menu items. Ryu, for example, does this. To access the drop-down sub-menus on such themes you just point at the main menu item (or category) and its children will drop down below, or to either side of the main item, depending on the location of the menu (sidebar, navigation bar).

    i think that hierarchy of posts is divided into categories so it shows up separately…shame about the hierarchy laid out like that and not hidden under the pages – any ideas?

    The natural hierarchy of posts is according to publishing date, but the order of posts in the dashboard or in archives is irrelevant with custom menus. Posts in a custom menu will display in the order you place them in the structure. The key issue here, is finding a theme which will hide sub-menu items, and display them when prompted to do so.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @fynearts,
    You might consider the Edin Theme as it covers up the menu items.
    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/edin/
    and consider the link below for SEO information:

    @Raincoaster:
    I based my answer off of this WordPress post (see the 2nd myth)
    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/
    Is there a more recent WordPress SEO documentation that you are aware of that specifies the fact that WordPress does not automattically notify Google when new pages or created or updated?

  • Unknown's avatar

    *are created or updated

  • Unknown's avatar

    @fynearts,

    The natural hierarchy of posts…

    I should have said the natural order of posts. There is no natural hierarchy of posts. I guess you were referring to a post category hierarchy, which can be created, but is not developed naturally.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @pcosta88

    You might consider the Edin Theme as it covers up the menu items.
    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/edin/

    thank you (again) for that – i do like it … i was looking at grid formats such as ubud but this theme has a nice professional look about it as well as grids.

    just to check a couple of things …
    1. when i do a preview it only gives me my home page – i am thinking this is because my posts page is not my home page? and that i will have to rebuild in the background to take advantage of the theme.

    2. before i begin i want to get it straight in my mind how it will be set up/how it will look. Do i understand correctly that the templates – all 4- are available to use as different pages ?

    3. and this suggestion – to use the theme Edin – will aid the SEO problem i have created for myself?

    i think i am going to dive in and just go for it – see what happens.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again!
    To answer your questions
    1. If you select preview you will be able to click around and preview your sites pages and posts in preview mode.
    Though from viewing your site with the Edin Theme is appears just fine.
    2. Yes, each page can be of a different template style.
    3. No. The theme itself wont help with SEO. What does? Good content helps and other sites linking to your site. The positive is that WordPress already makes your site search engine friendly by automattically reporting posts and pages to search engines.

    Yes! The best method is to jump on in! However, I would encourage you to create another blog as a “test” blog that way you can pilot changes before publishing them on your real blog.
