trying to relearn wp

whoops … you will see i just dove in … ok i understand the preview, different page different style (template) – nice and the SEO theory. i didnt know about ‘test’ blog but no matter i am in now.

a couple of questions … (i have been googling and looked at a couple of other replies that might have helped but now i am stuck again) …
    1. how do i choose the grid layout? i have been to appearance, themese and custom design.

    2. i think i would like my (current) blog posts page which is ‘all artworks’ to feature in the grid – not sure how i get the posts section to become a page? the old setup used categories to create posts on the side … i need now i think to make it pages – nice and clean and less confusing.

    thanks again !

ok .. i figured out the categories and artworks thanks !

the grid is still a question please …

    Hello!
The Grid Template can be difficult to understand. I’ve created a walkthrough at my site that you may find helpful:
    http://patcosta.com/2014/11/grid-template-edin-theme/

Feel free to post any more questions you have!

hi again … (::: sigh::: ) …. thank you so much pcosta – i understand somewhat from your links and your utube – however … i still have that original problem – my ‘all artworks’ page is not a page (its my postings ‘page’). now, i have created a new page (for grid setup) called ‘gallery’ – how do i make the gallery my posts page

as well as feature it as a grid formation
with each sub-item (category) as a pic for the grid.

    making sense?
i would like each sub item – collage, assemblage, photo etc (which are categories of the posts) to be the thumbnail for a grid formation on the page ‘Gallery’ …. (which at the moment is ‘all artworks’ and not a page).

    thanks in anticipation.

    Gina

I hope I’m not going off topic here but I saw that you asked about search engines being notified of new posts, I heard somewhere that if you use a search engine and search for your blog and log in that way every time, it helps. I don’t know, I guess I’m asking if it’s true. I wouldn’t want to mess with the actual stats by visiting myself.

Hi ktruecrime – not sure but i am more concerned with search engines finding my site when other people search for art/collage/tasmania/assemblage/me/ etc

i dont think visiting your own site makes a difference – i think google ‘knows’ … i am sure someone who has the knowledge will set us both straight.

meantime i do so struggle with this posting page /thumbnails in this new theme (EDin) that i have just switched to.

    @fynearts

how do i make the gallery my posts page
as well as feature it as a grid formation
with each sub-item (category) as a pic for the grid.

Unfortunately, WordPress.COM does not allow for the ability to take posts and make them into a gallery. Nor can you turn a page into a page where your posts go. However, you can create a gallery and insert it into a post. You *might* be able to insert images in the grid formation and then using the text editor link an image to the categories.

But isnt that what i did ? my posts are an ‘area’ (page) on their own with the static front page being home.

i have been reading about the grid which is part of reason i went with Edin – so the grid is a manual selection of pics? not a natural layout (that might have put latest posts on top) …

    right, thanks

You kind of have a work-around. You created a category link on your custom menu that takes people to a “page” where your categorized posts are.

    http://fynearts.com.au/category/all-artworks/photo/
This “page” includes all your posts categorized as photo.

i have been reading about the grid which is part of reason i went with Edin – so the grid is a manual selection of pics? not a natural layout (that might have put latest posts on top) …

For the Edin Theme in the Grid Template you can set a featured image that will display with the page. WordPress also allows users to create galleries. These galleries can be displayed on pages. These pages can be utilized in the Edin Theme.
What WordPress does not do is allow you to take individual posts (with or without pictures) and create a gallery. Galleries are only for pictures.

No, if I am understanding correctly, the Grid Template will not automattically put your latest posts on top. The Grid Template is only for use with pages not posts.

What you could do is create individual pages that describe each category of art work. You could then take those pages and make them part of the Grid Template. Then on those pages provide links to the post of each individual art work.

i have been following your videos pcosta … but i just dont see what you do … for example … my child page assemblage is set with ‘all artworks’ as parent, in a grid template but scrolling down i dont have the option to set a featured image.

i have all the children under all artworks but nothing showing up …
all artworks is set as a grid page template. and each child is set as parent (all artworks) and as a grid page template.. no options to set a featured image.

this is so frustrating … i have been here all day reading, trying, retrying …

i would like my site to look like this one
http://www.saatchiart.com/ it looks like the Edin theme ?

You cant set a featured image on a category page.

  • Unknown's avatar

its no longer a category page … see there are two now????? the last one on the list (for the time being) is a page called ‘all artworks’ … i am following the instructions …. i started again

i have just leftmy original up as its working more so far for me.

  • Unknown's avatar

i have started again … the second ‘all artworks’ on my home page is where i am trying again…..

in my previous post i am referring to this new ‘all artworks’ page – i have set up child pages called ‘child page assemblage’ etc – 4 child pages created …. as i said … my child page assemblage is set with ‘all artworks’ as parent, in a grid template but scrolling down i dont have the option to set a featured image.

i have all the children under all artworks but nothing showing up …
all artworks is set as a grid page template. and each child is set as parent (all artworks) and as a grid page template.. no options to set a featured image.

Dude, give us the exact links you are talking about, starting with http, and your expectation for each of them.

  • Unknown's avatar

    http://fynearts.com.au/all-artworks/
is the parent page – set to grid format – no grid

child page collage beneath that – empty
    http://fynearts.com.au/all-artworks/collage/

but collage as category – shows up
    http://fynearts.com.au/category/all-artworks/collage/

how do i make collage show up on the page called collage

and why is no grid happening?

Just to let you know I found Edin frustratingly difficult to create what it was i was looking for … i have changed my site to the Hatch Theme which is working a treat for me. i did though want to thank you each, for taking the time and effort in replying to my questions.

if anything attempting to solve those questions has given me greater insight into how the dashboard works. many thanks.
