trying to replace PDF
-
Hello, I have this PDF I uploaded to my WordPress blog:
When I deleted it permanently from my media library to re-up a revised version, it kept creating new PDF files (swrml1, swrml2, etc) instead of replacing the old one. I have tried deleting all permanently from my media library but they are still there. I just want to replace the original with the updated version and retain the swrml.pdf file name. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

To be clear, the Media Library shows that all the PDFs have been deleted but they are still active at their links and every time I try to re-up it adds a new sequential number to the file name to show it is not replacing any thing (but that’s exactly what I’m trying to do, replace the first file that has no number in its name).

Okay, I have uploaded the revised PDF under a new file name (https://jgtwo.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/star-wars-ruined-my-life.pdf). If you could please find out why the other PDFs (swrml, swrml2) are still showing up I’d appreciate it. I’d like them deleted.

UPDATE: Older PDFs still not disappeared, now the only one I need active is https://jgtwo.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/star-wars-ruined-my-life-updated.pdf. Please let me know why others aren’t disappearing from my media library even when I permanently delete them and how it can be fixed. Thank you.

Whoops, I meant https://jgtwo.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/star-wars-ruined-my-life-updated-again.pdf in previous message. Sorry.

Hi @jamesgreenejr, I just saw this post.
You won’t be able to replace a file with another file of the same name because of the way files attach records to the WordPress database.
If you plan on linking to a PDF that you can update from time to time, can I recommend using Cloudup instead? That would let you edit contents but keep the same link. That would also let you embed the PDF in your post, if that would help you. You’d just paste the cloudup link.
Also, re: all of those extra files you’ve added and deleted: some of those are still cached on our file servers. I’ll go ahead and clear them completely.

— there, I think I cleared out all of the cache copies you deleted (these would have cleared anyway shortly), but if you run into any that are still showing up, send a link and I’ll clear them too. Cheers :)

Also, I can see this one was already deleted: :/

I never give out a direct link to a PDF file – I give a link to the Post or Page the file is on
When I change the file, the file names are sequential File-01, File-02, File-03 etc – that gives me a basic version control, so when people download a new file, there is less confusion about what file is the proper version

Thanks, I really appreciate your help. I will look into Cloudup. As for the previous PDFs, this one is still showing up:
I’d like to have all PDFs cleared except the latest one I uploaded this morning:
https://jgtwo.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/star-wars-ruined-my-life-version-6-0.pdf.
What can I say? Sometimes it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Again, I thank you. Shalom.

Ah, that one’s clear too.
And I do think you’ll like cloudup… the embeddability alone make it handy, and the ability to switch out files helps folks who like to make a lot of updates.
Or do like auxclass suggested and only link to the post. I hope that helps :)
