    Hi MusicDoc,

Thank you for following this up. You are most helpful.

In the first instance, I shall take a look at those themes you listed and see if I can find one that is suitable for me.

Secondly I shall take a look at the https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/easy-tables-from-word-press?replies=3

Thank you for being such a help.

    I changed Theme to Motif.
Created a PARENT and called it Motif Stories.
Created STY Rome and Girl with cam as CHILD
Selected GRID, but the images do not display.

Do I have to do what I did yesterday by inserting a link into the actual images?

I was hoping that when I select Motif Stories the images would automatically appear.

    Hi JB,
The images that display in a grid page are featured images attached to each child page, not images selected from the content of the pages. The recommended width of an image (from the site’s media library or external files) to be used to create a featured image with the Motif theme is 1140 pixels. That information is available in the Quick Specs section at the bottom of the Motif support page. The reason why it should be so wide is that each thumbnail image in the grid becomes a header for the child page.

Do I have to do what I did yesterday by inserting a link into the actual images?

No. Just make them children at Page Attributes, and add a featured image (at least 1140 pixels wide) using the featured image module in the right sidebar of the page editor.

    Hi @johnbrennanlive,

To add to @musicdoc1’s instructions, the theme documentation for Motif has some details on setting up the front page:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/motif

Can you try following those steps and let us know where you’re getting stuck?

    Thanks, Jeremey.
    @ JB

Just make them children at Page Attributes

I mean make the pages to be in the grid children of a parent page, as you said you’ve done. Motif Stories, https://johnbrennanlive.wordpress.com/motif-stories/, is set to grid template?

    Hi MusicDoc and Jeremy,

Please bear with me, I am just doing some research on the sizing of Featured Images. MusicDoc suggested 1140 pixels wide, but I need to find what height.

I inserted an image, a featured image 1140 pixels wide, but Motif cropped top and bottom.

    Kind regards
    JB

    Featured Images not displaying:

    1. I created a Feature Image for each of my 2 stories.
    2. Under attributes I gave each story the same parent “Front Page Sample Motif”.
    3. I chose GRID as an attribute.

    Where did I go wrong?

    Kind regards
    JB

    Correction:
I forgot to go to Custom Menu. Sorry about that.
    I have images.
    I have captions.
    I have Front Page.

My Header Image sits to one side – not good.

I need to work on this a bit more.

    Kind regards

    Great suggestions all round.

I created a Motif Front page suggested by Jeremy. Thank you. A very important piece of information.

I created Featured Images as suggested by MusicDoc.

The images that display in a grid page are featured images attached to each child page, not images selected from the content of the pages.

This was very critical information so thank you.

    JB,

I created a Motif Front page suggested by Jeremy.

You are not using Motif’s Front Page template, so it will not look like the Motif demo. You have a Grid Page template static front page, whereas the demo has a Front Page template static front page.

Is there a way to remove the title “Stories” from here?

Yes. That’s the page title of the grid parent page, and your question is the page content. You can remove the title and the page content, but only — I found while testing — if you put something in the excerpt module. A mere dot is enough to do the trick. However, that dot might show up in archives pages. To eliminate this catch might require CSS customization.

    JB,
Regarding the child pages of the grid page “Stories” you say,

Each of the stories below are NOT included as sub-items in the custom menu.

That’s fine. But you may add them to the custom menu, if you like, nesting them under the link to the parent in the menu structure. See the Changing the Order & Creating Sub-Menus section of the Custom Menus support page.

    JB,
Regarding my suggestionabove wrt removing the parent page title and content: I had been inadvertently testing with the similar Edin theme. With Edin, the parent page can be removed from visibility entirely with the trick I suggested. With Motif, an empty white box remains after removing the page title and content, and creating an excerpt.

With either theme, the problem of having an unwanted excerpt can be sidestepped by using something invisible, such as an HTML tag (<b> for example), as an excerpt, though the tag might create an unwanted space in various archives pages. CSS customization could presumably solves these issues.

    Hi Music Doc,

With regard to the excerpt, in each of the 3 stories on display, the text you see is the text I put into excerpt.

http://d.pr/i/1aIXY [Thanks for the screen shot Jeremy]

Given that I am already using excerpt I will need to test your suggestions on Motif.

With regard to the Page template, I was not sure what I was using until I received your comment.

You are not using Motif’s Front Page template, so it will not look like the Motif demo. You have a Grid Page template static front page, whereas the demo has a Front Page template static front page.

Thank you for clarifying this, it is important to me.

I shall run more tests today.

    Kind regards
    JB

    Hi MusicDoc and Jeremy,

For the time being I am going to stick with a Grid Page Template Static Front Page as pointed out by musicdoc.

You have a Grid Page template static front page

This is until I do more investigation on the

    Motif’s Front Page template

In the meantime I would like to know more about
    1. Featured Image ratio. Is it 1140 : 500 pixels?
    2. Inspect Element which brings up CSS, I think
    3. How do I save changes made to what I think is CSS?

You see on my Front Page I want to get rid of the word Stories and the blank space for text below it.

When I go to Inspect Element, CSS appears. [I think that is what it is called]
I can move those elements to the bottom of the page
    OR
    Delete the word Stories altogether.

Problem is I do not know how to save the changes.
    Any suggestions?

    Kind regards
    JB

Before I go, let me say this that both of you have been such a wonderful help and I thank you.

    Hi JB,

With regard to the excerpt, in each of the 3 stories on display, the text you see is the text I put into excerpt.

That’s odd, because nothing I’ve put in the excerpt module of the grid page during tests has ever displayed on the grid page.

In the meantime I would like to know more about
    1. Featured Image ratio. Is it 1140 : 500 pixels?

The Motif support page only suggests a width for the featured image on the homepage, saying nothing about the size of featured images elsewhere. From the Quick Specs section (bottom of page):
“The featured image on the homepage works best with images at least 1140 wide.”
However, since Quick Specs also says, “On the full width and grid page templates the main column maximum width is 1072,” it follows that the featured image on a grid or full-width page should be at least that wide.

    2. Inspect Element which brings up CSS, I think
    3. How do I save changes made to what I think is CSS?

I’ve been wondering about this myself for a while. Here’s an answer I found in a Google products forum thread to the question “How do I save ‘Inspect Element” changes”?:

The “Inspect element” tool is for web developers, to allow them to inspect their website (inspecting websites with this tool is a great learning tool, too, imo), and make changes on the fly. Once you refresh the page, the changes are gone — and that’s totally normal (and the expected) behavior.
In short, you can’t save changes made with the element inspector (the web just doesn’t work that way!). However, what you can do is this: [read more]

The featured images in the child pages of the grid page of the Motif demo are each 1200 X 487 pixels, while the featured image in the Front Page template is 1200 X 643 pixels.

    Hi MusicDoc,

That’s odd, because nothing I’ve put in the excerpt module of the grid page during tests has ever displayed on the grid page.

Don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but I chose GRID in the Parent and GRID in the Child in page attributes.

You see I wasn’t sure where to insert GRID so I inserted them in both, Parent and Child. Furthermore, I did not nest them in custom menu, as sub items.

All this could be related, but then again it may not be.

Thanks for the information on each of the images:

The featured images in the child pages of the grid page of the Motif demo are each 1200 X 487 pixels, while the featured image in the Front Page template is 1200 X 643 pixels.

I am going to research the “Inspect Element” more.

There must be a way and I am determined to find it.

I shall follow up on the information you provided.

    Kind regards
    JB
