Trying to start building my new website

  • Unknown's avatar

    I currently have my firm website on WordPress.org, but I am creating a new one through WP.com as the WordPress.org seems to advanced for my rudimentary website building skills. The following is the information my IT person gave to me regarding my current hosting:
    //
    The domains use Microsoft for DNS.

    The website is hosted at WP Engine.

    The website is built using WordPress.

    All of these can be changed though.

    Typically you’ll build the new website and then change the domain name
    to send traffic to the new site instead of the old site. Then the old
    site can be retired.

    //

    Is this accurate? If so, should I stay with WordPress.org or switch to what seems to be a more user friendly wordpress.com. My current website has a lot of customization/code in it. Also, how to I transfer traffic over from my old website to my new one.

    Any and all would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Michael

    Hi Michael.

    What your IT person said was correct, basically the way it would work is you would create the new site in WordPress.com using a free domain that comes supplied, so you can build and test it, this time your current website is still live on its current domain which I believe is: https://www.assurelawgroup.com/

    When the time is ready to make the new WordPress.com website live, you will need to update the current domain’s DNS record to point to WordPress.com, here’s some information about that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/, or you can transfer the domain name to WordPress.com so its in the same place as the new website: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    With regards to the current site, you could use the same theme by uploading it to WordPress.com, a note this feature is only available for WordPress Business plans: https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/

    If not, you could find a suitable theme in the theme directory and rebuild the site in a new theme

    Wordpress.com theme directory: https://wordpress.com/themes

    You can also export your data from the old WordPress.org site to WordPress.com

    Export data: https://wordpress.org/support/article/tools-export-screen/
    Import data: https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

    Setting up on site WordPress.com then pointing the domain to your new site shouldn’t affect your site traffic. As long as the new website works fine and you correctly update the DNS or transfer the domain name. Then your traffic shouldn’t be affected.

    Hopefully this answers your questions? If you have anymore please let me know.

    Thank you for taking the time to confirm/explain that for me.

    Appreciate the much clearer path going forward.
