Trying to switch external domain from one wp.com blog to another

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi – can anyone help with my inability to switch domain from one wp.com blog to another? The domain in trouble is http://www.cantores.net. and the now-deleted WP.com blog that’s hogging it is cantorescotswolds.wordpress.com.

After switching the primary domain back to the wordpress original, and changing DNS settings at the cantores.net domain host, I was still getting the message “This domain has already been mapped to a WordPress.com blog.”

So I deleted the http://www.cantorescotswolds.wordpress.com blog completely and permanently, and am still getting the “already mapped” message.

What I want to do is map cantores.net to the new choir website at http://www.cantorescw.wordpress.com.

As a workaround, I’ve set up permament webforwarding, so at least people land in the right place. Though I’d prefer to have the domain come up as http://www.cantores.net, which is what we had when it was self-hosted.

Best thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

The blog you specified at cantores.net does not appear to be hosted at WordPress.com.

This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.

If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

I should add that http://www.cantores.net has been on a self-hosted wordpress.org site, but with the domain’s DNS settings changed back to wordpress, that surely should no longer have any influence. Also, the error message I get is that cantores.net is “already mapped to a wordpress.com” site, not a wordpress.org. Very confusing.

Hi there, Since cantorescotswolds.wordpress.com has been deleted, I’ve removed that old domain mapping record and you should now be able to map it to the site you desire. You will need to point the nameservers for that domain back at WordPress.com. It may take 24-48 hours for the nameserver change to propagate, but typically it is less. I would wait for a couple hours and then try the mapping. For your reference, here is our support document on mapping an existing domain: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Let me know if you have any problems or additional questions.

PS. cantorescw.wordpress.com sooooo doesn’t look like Digg 3. Great work in the customization.

Many many thanks. Worked a treat. And thanks for the kind words about the look of the site – I just love WordPress in general!

However – I did indeed scour the support pages for info on how to clear a previous, now redundant mapping, and had read in detail the one you suggested I read. There was no way, it seemed, of clearing that mapping as an ordinary user, so thanks for doing that at your end.

Could it be because this was in fact a redundant wordpress.com site, superseded by the self-hosted one to which I had mapped cantores.net via DNS? Or, on late reflection, could it be because I had hidden the old site by making it private? Either way, surely deleting it should have released the mapping without you having to intervene?

All theoretical now, of course, with the new DNS redirect working a treat.

    Thanks again.

Hi there, you are welcome. The domain mapping can be unsubscribed by the user at Store > My Upgrades in the dashboard, but we don’t mind doing it for the user. The support page I’ll look over for possible updating to make that more clear.

Please let us know if you have any further questions and best of luck.

Yup, I realise that, but seemed to get caught in a kind of catch-22, with mapping expired, and anyway by then operating completely independently of wordpress.com with an external DNS domain redirect to a self-hosted wordpress.org site.

Meant I couldn’t unsubscribe, as I was no longer subscribed anyway.

Believe me, I tried everything! But – this has worked, and I now at last know how properly to contact you lovely WordPress support people.

    Thanks as ever.
