trying to switch to a new theme – sidebar and main content switched

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been using Tarski and every other theme I try to change to seems to put the main content of my current blog in the sidebar section and vice versa. I’m not sure what’s going on. Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please provide an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question.

Switching a new theme is easy and problem free provided you choose one that has the same or greater maximum displayed image width. If it does not then you will have to edit your images and resize them. Appearance > Themes > select a theme and click “preview” then if you like it click “activate”

To select a theme you can use the Themes Showcase. The searchbox has feature filters you can use to narrow your search.

Thanks. I checked the numbers and they should work just fine. I don’t think that’s it.

    Nicole,
We need more information. Exactly which new theme ie. what is the name of the theme that you clicked the “activate” link on? And exactly what happened when you clicked the “activate” link?

Have you copied and pasted content into posts or pages on your blog? Go here please > Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

If you have been doing that the cumulative effect can be a mess that does overflow into your sidebar, unless you were using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor prior to inserting the copied and pasted content. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

Thanks so much for trying to help! I don’t think I’ve every copied and pasted content. ??? I’m trying to switch from Tarski to Chateau. When I click “preview” the preview looks perfect… when I hit “activate” it goes haywire. Can you see it on my blog now?

WOAH! I know the Chateau theme very well as I use it on my private blog. I gave no idea why it’s doing that and Staff aren’t available until Tuesday. All I can suggest is to switch back to Tarski and get their help on Tuesday.

Ok. I figured it out. Well, not figured it out in knowing why it was doing that… but I fixed it. I just copied and pasted the original stylesheet info back into the CSS editor. I’m not sure why that worked, but it did. :)

I was totally unaware that this thread had anything whatsoever to do with CSS editing as you made no reference to it, did not say you had a custom design upgrade, and this thread was posted into the Support Forum, rather than into the CSS forum. If I had know that I would have posted this:

CSS is theme specific. If you have custom CSS and later change themes, you need to delete whatever CSS you have in the Editor, otherwise, you’ll get undesired results.

To ‘reset’ a theme, you need to delete the CSS in the Editor, make sure the “add to existing CSS” radio button is checked, then save. Things should go back to normal.

When you alter a theme’s stylesheet, you only need to put in the Editor the modification/additions to the CSS, not the entire thing. Read this for more info:

Your blog looks fabulous and I’m so glad you resolved this. Happy blogging! :)

Thanks! :) I didn’t change the Chateau CSS at all, so I didn’t think that was the problem. You’re right… it was probably old changes on my other theme. Thanks again for all your help!
