Trying to upgrade

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to upgrade to a Personal account but when I do the list of items in checkout doesn’t show the .com address. When I looked at upgrading before .com address was itemised. How do I know what I’m paying for?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also, when I previously looked at the itemised checkout, the .com domain name was different to the blog name. How can I ensure that I’m buying the correct .com address?

What is the domain URL that you want to register please?

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

You can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.

Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

  • Howdy –

Are you trying to use a domain that you already own? Or register a brand new domain?

Add the plan upgrade to your account first via wordpress.com/pricing/

Next, from your dashboard, click on My Sites > Domain > Add

    Thanks all.

@timethief – what confused me is that, when I first looked at upgrading to Personal, my example.com was itemised. When I looked at upgrading most recently this was no longer part of the itemisation and so I’m less sure that I’ll get this as part of my payment. Thanks for the modlook tip.

Howdy staff-zinnia – I’m trying to register a brand new domain by upgrading to Personal. As described to timethief above I’m unsure as to why the example.com registration is no longer showing up in itemisation when it was before.

  • Hi –

Thank you for that clarification. It’s helpful so that I can provide some accurate information for you :)

Try adding the plan to your account first via wordpress.com/pricing/ After you’ve paid for the plan you’re going to find it listed at wordpress.com/me/purchases/

From /me/purchases/ you’re able to manage your upgrades (renew or cancel) at any time. The plan is refundable for 30 days if it doesn’t work well for your needs. We can also help you with cancelling and getting a refund, you’ll just need to get in touch with support via wordpress.com/help/contact/

Once the plan is added you’ll want to sign back in to your WordPress.com account, click on My Sites > Domains to register the domain to your account. At check out you will not be asked to submit additional funds as this registration is included with your plan. You’ll want to pay with your plan credit instead.

If you have any screen shots of the itemized check out screen that’d be helpful for me to have a look at what you’re seeing.

    @aplantogo

You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

  • Good morning –

    Thank you timethief :)

aplantogo – I see that you’ve registered aplantogo.com under the Personal Plan. It looks like you’ve been successful, let me know if you’re still needing help with anything.
