Trying to Upgrade

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there! I originally started my blog as a free WordPress blog. It was great but when I was ready to grow, I switched it to Squarespace, where I have been since last March. I have become increasingly unhappy there and am ready to come back to a WordPress blog, except I’d like it to be premium. I logged into my free WP account and upgraded. I received an electronic receipt, but am not sure where to go now. My account (despite logging out and back in) is acting like I have not upgraded. How do I access the premium features? I’d esentially like to start from scratch – pick new theme, etc and then import my content from SS. I don’t need too much from my old free account, except that it is linked to my contact info. I tried “adding a new blog” but again, it only gave me the option to add another free one.
    Thanks for any help!

  • I am seeing http://capeislandrunners.wordpress.com/ as being upgraded to WordPress.com Premium.

Now, if you would prefer to start from scratch, you could set up a new blog, and I could transfer the Premium upgrade to the new blog.

Yes, it says that it has been updated in my account settings, but is still shows things like Premium themes as having a price tag (I was under the assumption that the Premium upgrade would cover the cost of those themes?).

If I set up a new blog (which I think would be the easiest way to go) can I still use the same email address when I set up a new account?

I was just looking at the differences in the plans and I see that “premium” themes are not actually part of the “premium” package – that is confusing wording! SO I guess that solves that.

I am still not clear on how to change the domain name to get rid of the “wordpress” part. I do not need to register the new one with WP, it is already in existence through GoDaddy. I just need to know how to link it to my new WP blog and how to import the Squarespace one. Thanks.

I’m so sorry to keep asking these questions – as I read more I have more/evolving ones!

On the support page that tells you how to import from various sites, but SS is not included. However, on the SS page, it says when you export it puts it into a WP friendly format, an xml file. How do I import this file in WP?

I also read more about the domain mapping and see that I need to change the mapping on the GoDaddy site. I should have remembered that as I did it with SS last year. However, it also mentions a $13 fee. Is this above the $99 fee I have already paid and would have included a domain name if I had not already registered one? Seems unfair.

I also recall when I paid the $99 it said I had 48 hrs to cancel the upgrade, but I do not see that on the receipt. Is that correct?

    Thanks again!

    WordPress.com Premium includes:

    -A Free Domain
    -Custom Design
    -VideoPress
    -Space Upgrade
    -Ad-Free

For more info, you can refer to this page: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/

Despite the similar name, WordPress.com Premium doesn’t include any of the Premium themes available here:

    Premium Themes

can I still use the same email address when I set up a new account?

You do not need to set up a new account, just a new WordPress.com site under your existing account. Log into WordPress.com, click on “my blogs” and then click on “create another blog”.

Ah, making my previous reply useless. Sorry about that. I was trying to take your questions one at a time so as to not confuse things.

I am still not clear on how to change the domain name to get rid of the “wordpress” part.

Simply log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard, click on Store–>Domains, enter your domain name in the “add a domain” box and click the “add domain” button. Then simply follow the instructions that appear to map your domain to your WordPress.com site.

  • However, on the SS page, it says when you export it puts it into a WP friendly format, an xml file. How do I import this file in WP?

If you have an XML file, you can follow the second part of these instructions to import it into your WordPress.com site:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

However, it also mentions a $13 fee. Is this above the $99 fee I have already paid

As you have purchased WordPress.com Premium, there will be no charge for mapping. Registering a new domain or mapping an externally registered domain is included with Premium.

I also recall when I paid the $99 it said I had 48 hrs to cancel the upgrade, but I do not see that on the receipt. Is that correct?

You actually have 30 days to cancel an upgrade. The only exception is for domain registrations which have only a 48 hour window. If you had registered a domain as part of your WordPress.com Premium upgrade and then wished to get a refund after 48 hours, you would receive a pro-rated refund.

Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

One last thing…I did start a new blog from scratch and would like the upgrade to be applied to it. It is called CIRunners.wordpress.com Can you help me with that?

Nevermind, figured out how to transfer the upgrade… I really need to stop asking you question before I try it on my own! Lesson learned :)
