Trying to use classic editor

  • Unknown's avatar

metabreakr, I opened a new account under my mother’s name and transferred her poetry blog.

However, the template I chose only allows for Block Editing. It took me six months to learn the Classic Editor so that’s what I’m comfortable with.

I followed the link — how to access the classic editor — but the instructions seem to be outdated. At least they don’t apply to the new template.

  • @topcat1953 would you send a link to the new site? Some themes are designed specifically for block editing, but we can check to see what you have.

Also, since it sounds like this is a different issue, would you mind if we split it off into a new thread with a more accurate title?

@supernovia, the thread began with a couple of issues and sort of branched out.

@supernovia, glohope is the username I set up for my mom’s account.

  • Hi @topcat1953, I went ahead and split this into a new thread. Long threads with multiple issues can get a bit unwieldy and harder for others to follow.

    Try this:

    – Go to https://wordpress.com/posts/

    – Click View (upper right)

    – Choose classic

    – The screen should refresh. Notice the “Add New” post button has an arrow next to it. Click that & you should see options for either editor.

Because Classic won’t be around forever, though, I do recommend getting to know the block editor well. Let us know what if any problems you’re running into, and if it’s just a matter of preference, let us know what is bothering you. There likely is a fix, so it would be better to learn the new editor before the old one goes away.

supernovia, that worked. I would have never known to click View.

You know, it really is true that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I mentioned on the other thread that it took me six months to learn Classic Editor.

I have tried since it was first introduced, but I just can’t grasp the Block Editor. I know that it is very useful to professionals, but a simple blogger like me is more comfortable with a platform like Facebook.

Blogger is pretty intuitive and simple to use, but WordPress has a more interactive community. I was thinking that I might just post on Blogger with a URL link on WordPress.

My sense is that WordPress wants to be more competitive with Squarespace, Wix and GoDaddy which is great for businesses, but it ignores the more basic need of bloggers.

  • Hi there,

Out of curiosity, have you tried the “classic block” at all? https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

It’s true that the block editor is a great help if you are trying to build a complex layout and don’t have the ability to create that using HTML (as used to be the case with the classic editor) but you are correct that it’s not what everyone needs.

The nice thing about the Classic block is that you can add it to a blank page, and within that block you can just sit down and write the way you are used to. The block even has a mini toolbar that has the same tools as the classic editor.

This allows you to mix your blog content in with blocks (if any are needed) or skip blocks altogether and just work within the classic block.

I’ve also sometimes used the Classic block to “get all the words on the page” and then used the “convert to blocks” option to then take that content and use it more freely in a block-based layout.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
