Trying to use whole image as header with Neo-Sapien theme
-
Hi there.
I have been trying to crop an image so that the whole of the picture is in the header. No matter how small I scale it in Gimp, and I’ve tried many different sizes and resolutions all the way down to really small, when it gets to the cropping stage, I can only choose to show a certain amount of the image instead of just the entire image.
Like here:
As you can see, it only lets me show to around three quarters down the image. Of course, I want to be able to use the whole image.
I’ve used the Neo-Sapien theme in the two and a half years that I’ve used this blog with WordPress. It used to just let you use the image as it was. Around a year or more ago, they changed it to what is there now (being unable to skip cropping the image).
I don’t really want to pay for the custom CSS just yet. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi there. Most themes have a prescribed width to height ratio for the custom header, so if your image has a different ratio (irrespective of size) it won’t display in full. Unfortunately your theme appears to be retired so there’s no support doc where I can find the header image size for your theme. You might be able to find it under Appearance ->Header on your dashboard.

It says 480 x250. But I’ve tried scaling images to those dimensions, tried scaling them to both bigger and smaller than that but it’s still the same. It won’t allow me to use the whole image.
I’m not sure I’m understanding the width to height ratio means, how do I know what width to height ratio to use for an image?

That’s the 480×250 measurement you posted above.
Let me tag this for staff to follow up. As your theme is retired I can’t upload it to my test blog to see if I can duplicate your problem, which limits my ability to help you troubleshoot this further. Please be patient while waiting for a response from staff.

No problem.
I’ve since tried editing with the CSS preview and to no avail.Though I have read that there is no easy solution as different themes require different coding and so on.
Out of curiosity, what exactly does it mean when a theme is retired?
There was a time when a picture you choose as a header didn’t need to be cropped and could be used as is. Somewhere along the way they changed it for some reason and it’s a pain. It’d be great if they could re-instate whatever they had before. For the moment I’ve taken away the header image but I think it looks a lot better with an image I love the Neo-Sapien theme so don’t want to change it at all.

As new features get introduced older themes that don’t support them are phased out. If you have the theme you can keep on using it, but new blogs cannot upload that theme anymore. It could be that causing your header issues. Staff will be able to give you a more conclusive answer on that.
As for the CSS, you can post directly in the CSS forum for expert advice on that: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform

For the moment, all header images need to be cropped if they don’t match the dimensions. We no longer stretch or squish the images to fit, as that was a constant complaint from many WordPress.com users.
