That site is known for its sensational and clickbait-type stories. This is about a setting regarding the sharing of content that has been there for years – https://wordpress.com/blog/2024/02/27/more-control-over-the-content-you-share/; they take it out of context and blow it up.

To be sure, it’s certainly a developing story (also picked up by The Verge), but the setting mentioned in that WordPress.com News announcement is brand new and is specific to Third Party Sharing.
This option will prevent this site’s content from being shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models.

It’s legit, and it would appear that we were volunteered and THEN told how to stop volunteering. Definite trust issue.
