Turn Akismet off?
-
Akismet is out of control. It’s dumping stuff into my spam queue and deleting it without me getting to see if first. I have friends that told me they tried to post comments and I never got them, but I notice on the akismet stats it shows it dumped a piece of spam that day. How do I turn it off??
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t turn Akismet off, and it’s not out of control (actually it’s one of the best things in wordpress). Comments on new posts caught by Akismet remain in the spam folder for 2 weeks. If you want that for comments on older posts as well, go to Settings > Discussion and tick the option “Don’t discard spam on old posts”. Then, if a friend’s comment is caught by Akismet, you can go to the spam folder and click the “Not spam” tab.
In Settings > Discussion there’s also the option “Hold a comment in the queue if it contains [ ] or more links”. You can change that too.

Thank you for your help but I hold to it being out of control.
It’s not even holding them in the queue. I don’t even get to see them. For instance it’s showing me that it caught two spam comments this week but my spam queue is totally empty. I changed the settings but I don’t trust it. There’s no way to shut it off and moderate my comments on my own by having to approve everything before it’s posted?

When you become more experienced, you’ll change your mind.
I told you why you’re seeing 2 caught but 0 in queue. With the option “Don’t discard spam on old posts” on, that will change.
And Akismet doesn’t mean you have to “approve everything before it’s posted”. To give you an idea: in the blog linked to my username I have 1120 posted comments at the moment, and Akismet has caught 2604 comments. Number of comments wrongly withheld as spam: three.

As Panos has indicated and as the contents of the forum searchbox attest to new bloggers frequently post on this topic. Please also note what Staff says here >WordPress.com automatically deletes spam from the biggest spam factories. That’s why your spam counter sometimes goes up without anything to show in your spam folder. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/akismet-blocking-my-comments?replies=4#post-448769

I also recommend holding all comments including spam to look over and approve or delete. Akismet has caught over 7,000 spam comments on my one-year old blog! There has been only ONE false positive–a pingback from Topsy, the twitter search engine, which I approved. Akismet missed about 500 spammy comments, which I deleted. So my stats are 7,530 spam, 146 legitimate comments. I don’t know how I’d manage without Akismet. Thank you, Akismet and wordpress!
